인공지능 시대의 시집 읽기를 위한 시론 ­―『시를 쓰는 이유』와 『9+i』를 중심으로 (An Essay on Reading Poetry Collections in the Era of Artificial Intelligence)

초록

본 연구는 인공지능 시대의 시집 읽기가 어떠한 의미를 지닐 수 있을지 두 권의 인공지능 시집을 통해 살펴보고자 했다. 생성형 인공지능 언어모델인 ChatGPT가 공개되고 널리 사용되면서 인공지능과 글쓰기에 대한 고찰은 더욱 첨예해지고 있다. 이러한 흐름 속에서 국내에서 출간된 두 권의 시집 『시를 쓰는 이유』와 『9+i』는 주목을 요한다. 2022년 발행된 이 두 권의 시집을 두고 여러 연구자들이 형성한 담론은 인공지능 시대에 시가 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있을지 질문을 던지게 한다는 점에서 유의미하다. 인공지능 기술을 활용한 두 권의 시집과 그것을 둘러싼 여러 반응을 살펴봄으로써 본 연구에서는 다음과 같은 결론을 도출하였다.
먼저 인공지능 시집의 출간은 우리가 오랫동안 당연하다고 여겨 왔던, 시와 시 언어에 대한 고정관념들을 하나하나 다시 들여다볼 수 있게 만드는 계기가 될 수 있다. 시와 문학, 예술은 고정된 것이 아니며 원래부터 그리고 앞으로도 끊임없이 변화를 통해 존속할 것이다. 인공지능 담론의 파급력이 언제까지 지속될지는 알 수 없지만, 그것이 시 연구자들에게 다양한 성찰의 기회를 마련하는 것은 사실이다. 인공지능 시집의 가능성과 한계를 균형 있게 점검해 보고 시란 무엇인가, 시의 언어란 무엇인가 등 다양한 질문을 던질 때 비로소 인공지능 시대의 시 읽기가 어떤 의미를 지니는지 의미화할 수 있다.
둘째, 우리는 인공지능 기술과 협업함으로써 새롭게 얽혀드는 저자-지각자 개념을 구축하고 확장해 나갈 수 있다. 그러한 시도의 결과가 어떻든 간에 지금으로서는 보다 다양한 시도를 해 보아야 할 것이다. 인공지능 시집 출간은 시적 주체 개념에 대해 논의할 수 있는 폭을 확장하고, 인공지능 시집을 기존의 시론만으로 읽어낼 수 없는 장(場)으로 의미화한다. 지나친 낙관이나 비관을 경계하면서, 이미 다가온 현실과 앞으로 다가올 미래를 여러 각도에서 조망하면서 우리가 할 수 있는 고민을 하는 데 역량을 모을 필요가 있어 보인다.

This study sought to investigate the potential implications of reading poetry in the era of artificial intelligence by examining two volumes of poetry generated by artificial intelligence. The advent of the generative AI language model, ChatGPT, and its widespread use have heightened scholarly reflections on the intersection of artificial intelligence and writing. Within this context, two volumes of poetry from South Korea, namely "The Reason for Writing Poetry" and "9+i," have garnered notable attention. The discourse formulated by various researchers around these volumes, published in 2022, is significant in prompting inquiries into the potential significance of poetry in the age of artificial intelligence.
Through an analysis of these two AI-generated poetry volumes and the diverse responses they have elicited, this study arrives at the following conclusions. Firstly, the release of AI-generated poetry provides an impetus for reevaluating long-held assumptions about poetry and its linguistic constructs. Poetry, literature, and art are dynamic entities that undergo continual transformation. While the longevity of the impact of AI discourse remains uncertain, it presents an opportunity for scholars to engage in multifaceted reflections. A balanced examination of the possibilities and limitations of AI-generated poetry, along with posing diverse inquiries about the nature of poetry and its language, contributes to the meaningful interpretation of poetry in the era of artificial intelligence.
Secondly, collaboration with AI technology allows for the construction and expansion of the concept of the author-reader relationship in novel ways. Regardless of the outcomes of such endeavors, there is a necessity to explore various approaches. The publication of AI-generated poetry extends the discourse on the concept of poetic subjectivity and imbues AI-generated poetry with significance as a space that transcends interpretation solely through conventional poetic discourse. While cautioning against undue optimism or pessimism, cultivating the capacity to contemplate present realities and forthcoming futures from diverse perspectives is deemed essential.
