시툰(詩+cartoon)의 장르 미학과 시 교육에서의 활용 방안 연구 (A Study on Si-toon’s Genre Aesthetics and Measures to be Used in Poetry Education)

이 글은 2010년대 초반에 등장하여 하나의 장르로 매김 해 가고 있는 ‘시툰’ 의 시 교육적 가치에 주목하여 이를 시 교육에 활용하는 방안을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이미 발표된 시를 만화로 재구성한 후 만화와 원 텍스트를순차적으로 배치하는 양식을 가리키는 ‘시툰’이란 용어는 원래 시(詩)와 웹툰(webtoon)이 결합된 장르를 가리키는 장르명으로서 출판사 창비교육에 의해제안되었다. 그러나 이 글은 웹의 기반성이 이 장르의 미학에 관여하는 중대한 요소가 아니라는 점에서 ‘시툰’을 시(詩)와 만화(cartoon)가 결합된 양식을가리키는 용어로 그 범위를 확대⋅재정의하고, 시 교육적인 관점에서 그것의미학과 한계를 고찰해보았다.
시 교육적 관점에서 시툰은 만화라는 친숙한 대중예술 장르를 통해 독자가시에 친밀하게 다가갈 수 있게 하는 교두보 역할을 한다는 점에서 주목된다.
그런데 시툰은 이 외에도 시적 상황의 서사적 제시를 통한 공감의 확보, 의미 공백의 채움, 시의 의미 확장, 만화 문법을 활용한 시의 감각화 등을 통해 시에 대한 독자의 이해를 높이는 데 긍정적인 작용을 한다. 그러나 시툰은 자칫시의 내용 위주로만 시를 이해하게 할 수 있으며, 시의 의미를 단순화시켜 독자의 상상과 사고를 제한하는 경우 등에는 시의 이해에 부정적인 영향을 미칠수도 있다. 이에 이 글은 시 교육에서 시툰을 활용하는 방안은 시툰의 장르적미학과 한계를 분명히 인식한 상태에서 신중하게 제안되어야 함을 주장하며그 구체적인 교육 방안을 가이드라인과 함께 제시해보았다

영어초록

This study aimed to examine the measures to use ‘si-toon’, which is becoming a type of genre after its advent in the 2010s, in poetry education by paying attention to its poetry education values. Si-toon - a genre combining poetry and webtoon - was proposed by the publisher Changbi Edu. However, since the basis of web is not a critical factor involved in the aesthetics of si-toon, this study expanded and redefined si-toon as the combination of poetry and cartoon and looked into its aesthetics and limitations from the perspective of poetry education.
Normally, si-toon is comprised of the style of drawing cartoon based on published poem and placing poem text behind the cartoon. From this point, poem and cartoon create new meaning arena based on mutual interaction as respectively completed texts. In the sense that si-toon is the meeting between poetry and painting, it ranks below existing traditions such as illustrated texts and poetry picture books. However, it has the genre feature of requiring more intensive interpretation of poem because of cartoon genre being comprised of painting and language.
From the viewpoint of poetry education, si-toon is worthy of attention in the sense that it plays the role of a bridgehead intimately approaching poetry, which is regarded as an abstruse pure art genre, through cartoon - an intimate popular art genre. Furthermore, si-toon can contribute to enhancing understanding of poetry through obtaining sympathy based on narrative production of poetic situations, filling absence of meaning, poetry sensitization using cartoon grammar, and expansion of poetry meaning. However, si-toon can lead readers to understand poetry solely focusing on their contents, limit readers’ imagination and thinking by simplifying meaning of poetry, and exert negative influence on understanding of poetry when it comes to cases in which only visual images are caricatured. In this light, this study asserted that the educational measure to use si-toon in poetry education should be cautiously proposed while clearly recognizing si-toon’s genre aesthetics and limitations and proposed detailed educational measures along with guidelines.
