여말선초 변계량의 활동과 춘정시의 특질 (The Characteristics of Chunjeong poetry(春亭詩) and activities of Byeon Gye-ryang from the late Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty)

초록

조선전기 한문학은 고려말 문학사의 연장 선상에 있다. 춘정(春亭) 변계량(卞季良: 1369-1430)은 여말선초를 대표하는 문인 중 한 명이다. 그는 고려말엽에 과거에 급제하여 출사(出仕)했지만, 조선조 개국 후에도 활발한 활동을 하였다. 특히 변계량은 문학사와 학술사적 측면에서 이색→정몽주→권근→변계량으로 이어지는 여말선초 학맥의 계승자이며, 조선조 개국 후에는 정도전과 권근에 이어 문병(文柄)을 잡아 활동했기에 조선초기 문학사 연구를 위해서는 변계량에 대한 이해가 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 변계량의 교유관계를 중심으로 그가 어떤 문학적 활동을 전개했으며, 문학사에 끼친 업적과 변계량 시의 문학적 특질에 대해 살펴보았다.
변계량은 일찍이 1385년(우왕 11)에 문과에 급제하였는데, 당시 주시관(主試官)이 염국보(廉國寶)와 정몽주(鄭夢周)였기에 이들을 스승이라고 지칭할 수 있다. 또한 목은(牧隱) 이색(李穡)과 도은(陶隱) 이숭인(李崇仁), 양촌(陽村) 권근(權近), 호정(浩亭) 하륜(河崙)도 그가 스승처럼 받들었던 인물이라 할 수 있다. 변계량과 가장 친하게 교유했던 인물로는 우선 과거 동방(同榜)인 용헌(容軒) 이원(李原)과 매헌(梅軒) 권우(權遇)를 들 수 있다.
춘정시의 주요 품격으로 ‘한적(閑適)’과 ‘청신(淸新)’을 꼽을 수 있다. 춘정과 동시대에 활동했던 문인 권제(權踶)는 춘정시에 대해 ‘특히 시에 뛰어났는데, 맑으면서도 지나치지 않고 담박하면서도 천근하지 않다[尤長於詩, 淸而不苦, 淡而不淺]’라고 하였고, 17세기 후반에 활동했던 저명한 비평가 홍만종(洪萬宗)은 그의 시화집 『소화시평(小華詩評)』에서 춘정시를 ‘청신(淸新)’하다고 말하면서, 경물묘사가 새롭다고 높게 평가하였다. 비슷한 시기에 활동했던 호곡(壺谷) 남용익(南龍翼)도 춘정시에 대해 ‘연달(練達)’하다고 긍정적인 평가를 하였다. 또한 춘정은 잘 알려진 바와 같이 앞선 시대의 권근(權近)을 이어 세종대에 문형(文衡)을 잡았고, 이를 다음 세대의 서거정(徐居正)에게 계승한 문학적 업적이 있다.
지금까지 조선전기 문학사에 대한 연구는 여러 인물들을 중심으로 이뤄져 왔지만, 학맥과 학통, 문학적 계승이라는 측면에서 살펴본 연구는 다소 미진하다고 할 수 있다. 변계량은 고려후기 문단의 영수였던 목은(牧隱) 이색(李穡)과 그의 후계자인 포은(圃隱) 정몽주(鄭夢周), 그리고 목은의 제자인 양촌(陽村) 권근(權近)을 계승한 문인이자 학자로 조선초기 문학사를 이끌었던 인물이다. 또한 그는 이원(李原), 이직(李稷), 권제(權踶), 안지(安止) 등 조선전기에 활동했던 이들의 문학, 일명 ‘관인문학(官人文學)’의 대표자이기도 하다. 따라서 15세기 전반의 관인문학에 대한 이해를 위해서는 변계량에 대한 고찰이 필수적이다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 변계량의 학맥과 문학 활동을 고찰하고, 그 문학사적 의미를 파악하고자 한다.

Chinese literature in the early Joseon period is an extension of the literary history of the late Goryeo Dynasty. Chunjeong Byeon Gye-ryang (1369-1430) was one of the leading writers from the late Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty.
At the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, he passed the civil service exam. However, he was active even after the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, he is the successor of scholarly lineage, which leads to Lee Saek → Jeong Mong-ju → Kwon Geun → Byun Gye-ryang, in terms of literary and academic history from the late Goryeo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty. After the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, he was succeeded by Jeong Do-jeon and Kwon Geun and served as the general manager of literature and academia. Therefore, it is essential to understand Byeon Gye-ryang for the study of literary history in the early Joseon Dynasty. In this study, we looked at his literary activities, achievements in literary history, and the literary characteristics of his poetry centering on his social intercourse.
Byeon Gye-ryang passed the civil service examination in 1385 (the 11th year of King Wu's reign), At that time, the test supervisors were Yeom Guk-bo(廉國寶) and Jeong Mong-ju(鄭夢周) . Therefore, they can be referred to as his teachers. In addition, he served Mok-eun Lee Saek, Doeun Lee Sung-in, Yangchon Kwon Geun, and Hojeong Ha ryun like teachers. The figures who interacted most closely with Byeon Gye-ryang were Yongheon Lee Won and Maeheon Kwon Woo who studied with him when young.
The main qualities of Chunjeong poetry are Hanjeok(閑適) and Cheongshin(淸新). Kwon Je(權踶), a literary man who lived in the same era, said. "Chunjeong poetry is clear and not too much. And it's plain and not vulgar[尤長於詩, 淸而不苦, 淡而不淺]." Hong Man-jong(洪萬宗), a famous critic who was active in the late 17th century, said. “Chunjeong poetry is ‘Cheongshin”, And he highly praised in his collection of poems, 『Sowhasipyong(小華詩評)』. “The description of scenery and objects in Chunjeong poetry reached a new level.” Hogok Nam Yong-ik(南龍翼), who was active at the same time, also gave a positive evaluation, saying, "Chunjeong-si has reached a high level." In addition, as is well known, he led literature and academia in the era of King Sejong, following Kwon Geun of the previous era. In addition, he passed down the literary tradition to Seo Geo-jeong(徐居正) of the next generation.
Until now, research on the history of literature in the early Joseon Dynasty has been centered on several characters. However, the research examined in terms of academic background, academic communication, and academic genealogy is somewhat insufficient.
Byun Gye-ryang was a literary man and scholar who led the history of literature in the early Joseon Dynasty, and succeeded Mokeun Lee Saek, the leader of literary circles in the late Goryeo Dynasty, Mokeun’s successor Jeong Mong-ju, and Mokeun’s disciple Yangchon Kwon Geun.
He is also a representative of the so-called 'official literature(官人文學)', which refers to the literature of those who were active in the early Joseon Dynasty, such as Lee Won(李原), Lee Jik,(李稷), Kwon Je(權踶), and Anji(安止) etc. Therefore, it is essential to consider Byun Gye-ryang in order to understand official literature in the first half of the 15th century. To this end, this paper examines Byun Gye-ryang's academic background and literary activities, and attempts to grasp Chunjeong poetry’s literary and historical meaning.
