초록

『殊異傳』과 『海東高僧傳』 『三國遺事』에 阿道와 圓光의 전기가 각기 어떻게 서술되고 있는지 살펴본 결과 비록 두 사람만의 전기라는 제한은 있지만 각 문헌의 승려 전기를 서술 태도에 적지 않은 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. 『수이전』의 경우 설화집으로서 재미있고 신비한 이야기를 전하는데 관심이 있었지만 주인공의 실제 행적을 밝히는 데는 별다른 관심을 보이지 않고 있다. 따라서 서술의 토대가 된 자료도 기존에 전해지던 설화적 이야기들이었고 설화적 성격이 강하지 않은 자료들은 활용하지 않고 있다. 『수이전』의 이러한 성격은 唐나라 후기에 유행하였던 傳奇文學과 통하는 것으로서 그 영향을 받았을 가능성이 있다고 생각된다.
『해동고승전』은 본격적인 승려들의 전기집으로서 승려들의 행적을 종합적으로 서술하려는 의도로 편찬되었으며, 당시 전해지고 있던 자료들을 모두 망라하려 노력하고 있다. 하지만 『해동고승전』에서는 다양한 자료들을 인용하면서도 자료들 사이의 차이점에 대해서는 별다른 관심을 보이지 않고 있다. 즉 『속고승전』의 편찬자는 가능한 한 많은 자료를 모아서 승려의 전기를 풍부하게 하고자 하기는 하였지만 각각의 자료들에 나타나는 차이를 검토하여 승려의 행적을 보다 분명하게 밝히는 데는 큰 관심을 가지고 있지 않았다. 이는 『해동고승전』의 편찬 목적이 승려들의 행적을 구체적으로 밝히고 이를 통해 한국의 불교사를 종합적으로 이해하는 것이 아니라 그동안 널리 알려지지 않았던 해동 승려들의 위대함을 현창함으로서 해동 불교의 훌륭함을 드러내는 것이었음을 보여준다.
『삼국유사』는 본래 승려 전기집으로서 편찬된 것이 아니므로 특별히 주목할 만한 승려들의 전기만 수록하고 있고, 행적이 널리 알려진 승려의 경우에는 특징적인 내용만을 간략하게 적고 자세한 내용은 기존에 유통되고 있는 문헌에 미루고 있다. 하지만 『삼국유사』에서는 기존의 『해동고승전』에 인용되지 않은 자료를 제시하여 새로운 사실을 이야기하거나, 『해동고승전』의 잘못을 지적하는 등 『해동고승전』을 계승하면서도 이를 극복하려는 태도가 두드러지고 있다. 자료 이용에 있어서도 『해동고승전』 보다 시간적, 공간적으로 넓은 범위의 자료들을 섭렵하고 있을 뿐 아니라 자료의 타당성에 대한 평가에 있어서도 『해동고승전』보다 엄격한 태도를 보여주고 있다. 『해동고승전』의 경우 인용한 자료들에 대한 비판적 검토가 거의 보이지 않는 반면 『삼국유사』에서는 해당 자료의 타당성을 여러 측면에서 검토하고 있다. 『삼국유사』는 또한 승려 개인의 신이한 능력보다는 그들이 신라 불교사에서 담당한 역할에 초점을 맞추고 있는데, 이는 불교의 관점에서 삼국의 역사를 체계화하려고 한 『삼국유사』의 편찬 의도에서 비롯된 것이라고 생각된다.

영어초록

In this article we examined how the life of two renowned Buddhist monks Ado and Wongwang, were differently described in Goryeo period biographical texts like Su'i-jeon, Haedong goseungjeon and Samguk yusa. Each of these texts featured a unique attitude toward documenting a person's life, and those attitudes were quite different from each other.
Su'i-joen was a collection of tales, and was meant to convey interesting and mystical stories to the readers, rather than to reveal the historical details of a person's life. It was not meant to be a collection of biographies for Buddhist monks. It was originally meant to be collection of tales with various people as heroes of those stories. The nature and attitude of this Su'i-joen matches with the general tone of the so-called ‘Mystic Literature(傳奇文學)' that prevailed during the late Tang dynasty.
Unlike Su'i-joen, which was a collection of tales, Haedong goseungjeon was meant to be a collection of Buddhist monks' biographies, and was meant to deliver comprehensive history of the renowned monks' lives. This kind of trait is well shown by the fact that the author(compiler) consulted every source available at the time. Yet, the author(compiler) of Haedong goseungjeon consulted so many sources and quoted them all, he did not care to comment upon the many differences and discrepancies among all those conflicting and contradictory pieces of information. This means that the author wanted to accumulate as much information as possible to enrich the monks' biographies in terms of contents, but was not necessarily interested in comparing contradictory records with each other and explaining the reason for such differences and eventually acquiring a concrete historical understanding, based upon records of which the validity are solidly verified. It also means that Haedong goseungjeon was created in order to reveal previously unknown, magnificent deeds of the Korean Buddhist monks and therefore praise the grandness of Korean Buddhism, and not to construct comprehensive understanding of the monks' lives or to acquire systemic understanding of the history of Korean Buddhism.
Samguk yusa was not originally meant to be a collection of Buddhist monks' biographies, so only a number of renowned monks were covered. Also, renowned monks' lives were only presented in a fairly abbreviated form, and regarding details the readers were recommended to consult elsewhere such as the Haedong goseungjeon or other individual biographies. But Samguk yusa assumed a much stricter position in evaluating documents and material, much more than Haedong goseungjeon. Iryeon tried to evaluate the validity and accuracy of the materials he used and sources he quoted in many occasions. Iryon also tried to focus upon the roles the monks played in the history of Shilla Buddhism, instead of presenting them as mystical figures. This clearly shows his objective of establishing a systemic understanding of the Three kingdoms' history, in terms of Buddhism.
