초록

부처는 이승성불을 가리켜 성불의 최대 난사라고 하였으며 용수 역시 불법 제일의 불가사의라고 정의하였다. 이승성불이 여인과 일천제의 성불보다 어렵다는 것이다. 따라서 이승성불은 불교의 대중성과 함께 성불의 개방성을 파악하는데 매우 중요한 요소임에 틀림없다.
원효는 이승이 비록 일체행에 대해 한결같이 싫어하고 등지려는 마음이 있으나 정성이승을 포함한 사종성문도, 삼승의 행인, 사생의 중생과 더불어 모두 불자가 되고 보살이니 불성이 있기 때문에 모두 작불할 수 있다고 하여 이승인의 성불을 분명히 하였다. 그럼에도 『아미타경소』에서 ‘二乘種不生’이라고 언급한 것은 일체행에 대해 싫어하고 등지려는 이승에게 자신이 살아가는 현실의 중요함을 주장하기 위함이었을 것으로 판단하였다. 그리고 이승의 사회적인 성격으로 士계층에 주목해 보았다.
士계층 가운데 中․下士의 특징에 대해 논하고 이들의 불교사상도 살펴보았다. 현실을 중요시 하는 사계층의 불교사상으로는 현실에서 인간의 활동을 강조한 『법화경』과의 관련성에 주목하였다. 아울러 『법화경』이 수지․독송․서사를 강조한 점을 들어 지식인인 사계층과 연결해 보았다. 그리고 원효의 이승성불론 역시 법화경을 중심으로 전개하였을 것으로 추론하였다.
무엇보다 원효의 이승성불론에서 주목할 부분은 불법유통의 담당자로 대중을 지목한 점을 꼽았다. 대승에 귀의한 대중을 불법유통의 담당자로 지목하여 사람을 구별하지 않은 점이 원효 대중불교의 특징으로 규정하였다. 그리고 원효는 이승성불론을 통해 성불의 개방성과 함께 불교의 대중성을 주장하였을 것이며 현실이라는 대지 속으로 들어가서 정법의 소리를 끊임없이 들려주어야 한다고 강조했을 것으로 판단하였다.

영어초록

The Buddha said that the accomplishing Buddhahood of two vehicles (direct disciples 聲聞 śrāvaka and solitary realizers 緣覺 pratyekabuddhas) is the most difficult thing in accomplishing Buddhahood, and Nāgârjuna (2nd-3rd century) also said it is the first wonder and mystery in the history of Buddha-dharma. The accomplishing Buddhahood of two vehicles is harder than the accomplishing Buddhahood of a woman and icchantika (a person who is not capable of attaining the Buddhist goal of enlightenment). Accordingly, it is very important factor to grasp the openness of Buddhism along with the popularity of Buddhism. Wonhyo, even though the two vehicles tends to go against all practices, made it clear that the four kinds of direct disciples including the two non-Mahāyāna adherents of direct disciples (śrāvaka) and solitary realizers (pratyekabuddhas) can accomplish Buddhahood as all have their own inherent Buddha-nature.　The reason why 'two vehicles cannot born (in the next life)' is mentioned in the sutra is that Wonhyo emphasized the reality of this world. As most of the common people belong to the two vehicles, so Wonhyo would like to give them the opportunity to convert their mind toward a Buddhist end. Accordingly, I researched　especially the two vehicles in terms of social character.
Among three types of practitioners, I especially researched the middle and inferior Practitioner and reviewed their Buddhist thought. I paid special attention to the their relationship in terms of Buddhist thought with the Lotus Sutra that emphasized the practical and realistic aspect of our life. Also I compared the practice of middle and inferior Practitioner to the Lotus Sutra that emphasized sutra copying and chanting, reading sutra an object of contemplation as they understand character language. And also I deducted that Wonhyo's ​Theory on Accomplishing Buddhahood of Two Vehicles developed mainly on the basis of the Lotus Sutra.
First of all, I pointed out the role of general public to propagate Buddha-Dharma that appeared in the Wonhyo's ​Theory on Accomplishing Buddhahood of Two Vehicles. I concluded "the non-discrimination of all classes people who take refuge in the Buddha's teaching" as the characteristics of Wonhyo's public Buddhism. Wonhyo insisted the popularity of Buddhism along with openness of Buddhism through his ​Theory on Accomplishing Buddhahood of Two Vehicles. In addition, he also emphasized that the true Dharma should be preached continually to all people without discrimination.
