초록

Haengdangoseul is an old tale derived from a section of the ‘Fisher of Zhuangzi’ where one day Confucius strolls around the forest and takes a rest on a haengdan, and the students read while Confucius plays a geomungo and sings. This symbolizes the type of teaching and learning that has come to most clearly represent Confucius and his students. Since the Han dynasty, China had visualized these kinds of scenes of Confucius accompanied by his students. Haengdangoseul achieved the completion of its genre in Haengdanyeac In Confucius SeongjeokDo which faithfully depicted the ‘Fisher of Zhuangzi’. There markable icons of Haengdanyeac include Haengdan, Binggwetangeumsang and some books, and they were often quoted in other short stories that depict Confucius teaching his students.
Jeong Seon created his own style of Confucius story while inheriting the traditional representations of Confucius study that were implied in Haeng Dan and Haengdangeoseul. Jeong mixed Confucius stories from the ‘Fisher of Zhuangzi’ and ‘ZeungJeom’ stories of the ‘SeonJin of Analects of Confucius’, as well as quoting several other tales. Other painters have portrayed Confucius and Confucianism scholars as dignified saints who strictly follow the principles of Confucianism,Avoiding the approaches that have tended to rigidly depict Confucius and his students, whether as individual figures or groups, as objects of reverence and admiration, Jeong instead chose to visualize them using a portrait style of painting, with an impression that they were at harmony with nature,As seen above, Jeong created another type of representation of Confucius teaching his students, by mixing the questions and answers shared between them, their strict lessons, as well as geomungo playing and relaxation with music. His reinterpretation of the stories of Confucius suggests a genuine model of saints who left behind ideal education, and ruling principles through self-discipline.
