량스추(梁實秋)와 피천득(皮天得)의 번역론에 관한 비교 고찰 (A Comparative Study on the Translation of Liang-Shiqiu and Pi-Cheondeuk)

초록

이 논문에서는 중국과 한국을 대표하는 산문가이자 그 전에 외국문학을 전공한 번역가로서 탁월한 업적을 남긴 량스추와 피천득의 번역 관련 논의를 토대로 그들의 번역관을 비교 분석한다. 이 연구를 통해 그들이 번역을 통해 문학 본연의 인성 가치와 보편적인 인간애를 옮기며 문학적 이상을 실천했고, 원작에 대한 독자의 이해를 돕기 위한 일종의 ‘봉사’로서 번역방법에 있어 많은 계발 작용을 했다는 것을 확인할 수 있다.
먼저, 량스추는 번역으로 시공을 초월한 인성의 가치를 옮기는 데 각별히 애정을 쏟았다. 그중에서도 그는 셰익스피어 문학의 다양한 인성의 모습들과 삶에 대한 끊임없는 탐색에서 고전적 가치를 찾았고, 자신의 문학적 이상을 나타내는 방편으로서 번역에 가장 큰 공력을 들였다. 번역방법에 관해 그는 원문의 구절을 단위로 충분히 소화한 다음 충실하고 매끄러운 번역으로 신뢰성과 가독성을 높이려 했다. 또한 그는 원작에 대해 엄격히 분석하는 번역 원칙으로 주석을 통해 고증의 근거, 묘사 서술, 해설 등 여러 방법을 강구했고, 작품마다 서문 집필을 통해 판본 역사, 저작연대, 고사 유래, 무대 역사, 텍스트 연구 등을 망라함으로써 독자가 원작을 이해하고 예술 체험의 효과를 거둘 수 있도록 했다. 그리고 그는 원작의 구조를 최대한 보존하는 번역 원칙으로 원문과 번역문이 구절마다 대응이 되게끔 함으로써 번역 중에 자칫 수반될 수 있는 어조와 리듬의 편차를 피했다.
다음으로, 피천득은 번역을 자신의 문학과 깊이 연계시켰고, 또 하나의 창작과정으로 보고 좋은 번역, 아름다운 번역이 되도록 정성을 기울였다. 그는 셰익스피어 문학이 소중한 삶의 가치를 엄선하고, 인간의 보편적인 희노애락의 감성을 다양하게 표현한 문학 이상이라고 보고, 번역을 통해 자신의 문학세계를 충실히 발전시켜 나갔다. 번역방법에 관해 그는 원문의 본래 의미를 훼손하지 않는 직역과 우리 문학을 읽는 것처럼 자연스러운 느낌이 들게 하는 의역 사이에서 조화와 균형을 이루려고 애썼다. 그리고 그는 쉽고 재미있는 번역 목표를 설정하며 작품 해설과 어휘 선택부터 문장 해석 뒤 보충 해설에 이르기까지 두루 이해하기 쉽게 흥미를 불러일으켰다.

영어초록

In this paper, tries to discuss translation between Liang-Shiqiu and Pi-Cheondeuk, their translation views are compared and analyzed. Through this study, it can be confirmed that they practiced literary ideals by translating the personality value and humanity, and played a lot of development in translation methods as a kind of "service" to help readers understand the original.
First, Liang-Shiqiu devoted his special affection to translating the value of personality that transcends time and space. Among them, he found classical value in Shakespeare's literature's constant search for various aspects of personality and life, and put the greatest effort into translation as a means of expressing his literary ideals. As for the translation method, he tried to fully digest the phrases in the original text in units and then increase reliability and readability through faithful and smooth translation. In addition, he devised various methods, including evidence of historical evidence, descriptive description, and commentary, through commentary as a translation principle that strictly analyzes the original work, and by writing the preface for each work, he included edition history, literary age, ancient history, stage history, and text research so that readers could understand the original work and achieve the effect of art experience. And he avoided variations in tone and rhythm that could accompany the translation by making the original text and translation correspond to each phrase with a translation principle that preserves the structure of the original as much as possible.
Next, Pi-Cheondeuk deeply linked translation to his literature, and he saw it as another creative process and devoted himself to good translation and beautiful translation. He saw Shakespeare's literature as more than literature that carefully selected the value of life and expressed the universal emotions of human joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure, and faithfully developed his literary world through translation. Regarding the translation method, he tried to achieve harmony and balance between the literal translation that did not undermine the original meaning of the original text and the paraphrases that made it feel as natural as reading our literature. And he set easy and interesting translation goals and intrigued everyone from work description and vocabulary selection to supplementary explanations after sentence interpretation.
