적응형 기업 내에서의 비즈니스 프로세스 민첩성에 대한 정보기술 역량의 관점 (A Perspective of Information Technology Capability on Business Process Agility in an Adaptive Enterprise)

초록

정보기술(Information Technology: IT)이 기업 경쟁력을 증가시킨다는 주장과 실증적 증명은 이미 많은 연구들을 통해이루어져 왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고 보다 상세하게 IT가 기업 경쟁력 확보를 어떻게 혹은 어떤 과정을 통해 이루는가에 대해서는 여전히 정보시스템 연구의 주요 과제로 남아있다. 본 연구는 기업 경쟁 우위의 주요한 부분으로 비즈니스 프로세스 민첩성에 IT의 영향을 효과적으로 연결시키기 위해서 기업의 내적 자원의 어떠한 정보기술 역량이 필요한지에 대해살펴보고 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 영향을 미치는지를 조사하고자 한다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 두 가지 연구문제에 초점을 두었다. 첫째, 내부 및 외부 IT 역량과 비즈니스 프로세스 민첩성 사이에 긍정적인 관계가 있는가? 그리고 둘째, 내부 IT역량이 외부 IT 역량과 비즈니스 프로세스 민첩성 사이의 관계를 긍정적으로 조절하는 수준은 어느 정도인가? 이 같은질문에 답하기 위해, 본 연구는 내부 IT 역량에 대해 IT 비즈니스 연계 역량, IT 기반구조 역량, IT 주도적 자세, 세 가지 유형으로 정의하고, 외부 IT 역량은 벤더 지원과 컨설턴트 효과성으로 개념화 하였다. 제안한 연구모델을 검정하기 위해, 본 연구의 목적에 일치하는 153개의 기업을 대상으로 수집된 설문을 사용하여 PLS 접근 방법(SmartPLS 2.0)에따라 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 내부 IT 역량과 외부 IT 역량은 비즈니스 프로세스 민첩성에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 내부 IT 역량의 조절효과 검정에서는 다소 차이가 있는 것으로 밝혀졌는데, IT 비즈니스 연계 역량과 IT 주도적 자세의 정도에 따라 외부 IT 역량이 민첩성에 대한 영향을 유의하게 조절하는 반면 IT 기반구조 역량은 영향을 주지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 이는 이론적으로는 초기단계에서 진행되고 있는 민첩성연구에 또 다른 관점에서의 실증적 증거를 보여주는 시사점이 있으며, 실무적으로는 구체화된 통찰력을 제공하여 기업의 IT와 관련된 의사결정에 좋은 가이드라인이 될 수 있는 공헌점이 있다.

영어초록

Many researchers have conducted discourse and empirical studies, confirming that IT improvesfirms’ competitiveness. Nevertheless, how or through what process IT has improved firms’competitiveness still has not been established and remains as a major research question. Inother words, IT researchers have found for decades that IT capability is resource which isvaluable, rare and difficult to imitate and helps firms to secure competitiveness in the market.
However, they also found that they could not identify key mechanisms to bring betterperformances through IT capability. IT capability has a limitation of paradox that may restrictfirm's competence to respond to risks or opportunities. In addition, in decisive business process,the absence of agility may limit the performances of the firm substantially.
Thus, we examine what IT capabilities of internal resources of the firm are needed andinvestigate how and through what process they make effects to link business process agilitywith effects of IT. Our study focused on the following two research questions. First, is therepositive relationship between internal and external IT capability and business process agility?Second, to what extent does internal IT capability positively moderate the link between externalIT capability and business process agility? To answer these questions, we conceptualize threetypes of internal IT capability such as IT business spanning capability, IT infrastructurecapability, and IT proactive stance, and define external IT capability as vendor support andconsultant effectiveness. Based on these arguments, we propose that:Hypothesis 1: External IT capability will have a positive effect on business process AgilityHypothesis 2a: IT business spanning capability will have a positive effect on business processagilityHypothesis 2b: IT infrastructure capability will have a positive effect on business processagilityHypothesis 2c: IT proactive stance will have a positive effect on business process agilityHypothesis 3a: IT business spanning capability moderates the relationship between externalIT capability and business process agilityHypothesis 3b: IT infrastructure capability moderates the relationship between external ITcapability and business process agilityHypothesis 3c: IT proactive stance moderates the relationship between external IT capabilityand business process agilityTo test the proposed research model, we analyzed a total of responses from firms via PartialLeast Square, using SmartPLS 2.0. The results showed that internal IT capability and externalIT capability had statistically significant effects on business process agility. However, it wasidentified that there was difference in moderation effects of internal IT capability. It was foundthat IT infrastructure capability had no significant effect between external IT capability andbusiness agility while IT spanning capability and IT proactive stance had a significant moderatingeffect between this relationship.
Based on those results, we suggest that an effective model of IT governance on firm operationis essential to provide superior agility and adaptability in volatile markets. Theoretical implicationsin our study show empirical evidences from different perspectives to agility studies which arestill in primitive stage and it has practical contributions to be a good guideline for decisionmaking related to firm information technology by providing substantial insights
