중소벤처기업의 해외진출과 정보기술 역량의 전략적 적합성 (Internationalization of SMEs and Strategic Fit of Information Technology Capabilities)

초록

해외시장 진출은 중소벤처기업에게 경쟁을 위한 기회와 위협을 동시에 제공하지만 생존과 성장을 위한 필수적인 상황이 되고 있다. 그러나 중소벤처기업은 대기업에 비해 태생적으로 경영자원의 활용에 많은 제약이 있기 때문에 보다 효과적인 해외진출 의사결정을 위한 도구의 개발과 구축이 필수적이라 할 수 있다. 정보기술 역량은 중소벤처기업에게 필요로 하는 정보처리를 위한 효율적인 도구로 작동할 가능성이 높으나, 현재까지는 대기업 수준에서의 정보기술 역량에 관한 연구가 다수 진행되어온 것이 사실이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 우리나라 중소벤처기업의 해외진출에서 기업환경 요인인 환경 불확실성과 해외진입 방식의 선택이 정보요구 수준과 정보처리와 관련된 정보기술 역량에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고, 이후 정보요구 수준과 정보기술 역량의 전략적 적합성이 해외진출 성과에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 연구하고자 하였다. 이상과 같은 연구목적을 달성하기 위하여 5개의 연구가설을 수립하였고 127개 해외진출 중소벤처기업을 대상으로 공변량 구조방정식모형을 이용한 실증분석을 수행한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 환경 불확실성은 정보요구 수준과 정보기술 역량에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 중소벤처기업이 선택한 해외진입 방식은 정보기술 역량에는 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으나, 정보요구 수준에는 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 마지막으로 정보요구 수준과 정보기술 역량 간의 전략적 적합성은 해외진출성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이상과 같은 연구수행의 시사점으로는 상황적응 이론 관점에서 제시하고 있는 정보요구 수준과 정보기술 역량의 전략적 일치도가 높을수록 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 점을 확인하였다는 것이다. 이는 대기업에 비해 환경적 요구조건 및 변화에 더 많은 영향을 받을 수 있는 해외진출 중소벤처기업들은 기업의 내외부 환경에 적절히 대응할 수 있는 기업역량의 구축이 필요하며, 적절한 정보기술 역량을 통하여 필요한 경쟁역량을 확보할 수 있을 것이라는 것이다.

영어초록

Advancing into foreign markets provides SMEs with opportunities and threats for competition at the same time, but it is becoming an essential situation for survival and growth. However, since SMEs inherently have many restrictions on use of managerial resources compared to large companies, it can be said that the development and establishment of tools for more effective foreign expansion decision-making is essential. Information technology capabilities is highly likely to work as an efficient tool for information processing required by SMEs, but it is true that a number of studies on information technology capabilities at the level of large companies have been conducted so far. Therefore, this study examines how the environmental uncertainty, which is the factors of the business environment in the foreign expansion of Korean SMEs, and the choice of foreign entry mode affect the level of information requirements and information technology capabilities related to information processing. And then how the strategic fitness of information technology capabilities and information requirements affects the internationalization performance. In order to achieve the research purpose, 5 research hypotheses were established, and the results of an empirical analysis using the covariate structural equation modeling for 127 Korean SMEs with foreign expansion are as follows. First, it was found that environmental uncertainty had a positive effect on the level of information requirements and information technology capabilities. Second, the foreign entry mode chosen by SMEs was found to have a positive effect on information technology capabilities, but not on the level of information requirements. Lastly, it was found that the strategic fitness between the level of information requirements and information technology capabilities has a positive effect on internationalization performance. The implication of the research is that it was confirmed that the higher the strategic fitness between the level of information requirements and the information technology capabilities suggested from the point of view of the contingency theory, the more positive it has on the performance. This means that SMEs with foreign expansions that are more affected by environmental requirements and changes than large companies need to build corporate capabilities to respond appropriately to the internal and external environment of the company, and will be able to secure necessary competitive capabilities through appropriate information technology capabilities.
