주식형 펀드의 성과와 현금흐름의 볼록성 관계: 순현금흐름과 시장 점유율 변화 (Convexity in Fund Flow-Performance Relationship: Net Flows and Market Share Changes)

초록

Chevalier and Ellison(1997), Sirri and Tufano(1998) 등은 과거 성과-현금흐름이 볼록 관계에있다고 하였지만, 최근 Spiegel and Zhang(2013)은 현금흐름 측정 방법을 변화시켜, 성과-현금흐름관계가 선형임을 보였다. 이에 본 연구는 우리나라 주식형 펀드를 대상으로 Sirri and Tufano(1998)의 순현금흐름과 Spiegel and Zhang(2013)의 시장 점유율 변화를 모두 이용하여 성과-현금흐름의 볼록성 관계를 분석한다. 주요 검증 결과는 다음과 같다: 첫째, 미국과 달리 규모가 큰펀드의 성과가 향상되었을 때 전체 주식형 펀드의 순현금흐름이 가파르게 증가하였다. 둘째,우리나라 주식형 펀드의 성과-현금흐름 관계에 펀드 규모와 연령에 따라 다른 효과가 있음을확인하였다. 즉, 규모가 크고 연령이 적은 펀드에서 과거 성과-현금흐름의 관계가 더욱 확실히나타났다. 셋째, 현금흐름 측정 방법과 무관하게 우리나라 주식형 펀드의 성과-현금흐름 관계에서볼록성이 존재하였다. 넷째, 전환 회귀(switching regression) 모형을 이용하여 성과-현금흐름 관계를규모별, 연령별로 나누어 재검증하여 펀드 특성과 현금흐름 측정 방법에 따라 효과가 다르게나타남을 확인하였다. 규모별로 나누었을 때 규모가 큰 펀드 그룹에서만 성과-시장 점유율 변화간의 볼록성 관계가 존재하였으며, 연령별로 나누었을 때 연령이 적은 펀드 그룹에서 성과-현금흐름 간의 볼록성 관계가 더 크게 나타났다. 이는 우리나라 펀드 산업의 독특한 상황으로 설명할수 있는데, 소규모 펀드가 매우 많은 펀드 시장에서 규모가 큰 펀드가 시장을 주도하고, 펀드 산업의역사가 짧고 단기간에 크게 성장한 펀드 시장에서 상대적으로 신설된 펀드로 펀드 투자자의관심이 집중되었기 때문이다. 본 연구는 미국의 발전된 뮤추얼 펀드 시장과는 다른 우리나라펀드 시장 상황으로 과거 성과-현금흐름의 볼록성 관계를 설명하였다는 데에 의의를 가진다.

영어초록

The convex relationship between fund performance and net flows has been investigated bymany studies including Chevalier and Ellison (1997), Sirri and Tufano (1998). Recently, Spiegeland Zhang (2013) show that the flow-performance relationship is linear when using their newmarket-share measure. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between fundperformance and cash flows of Korean equity funds using both measures of net flow and marketshare change in the Korean context. The main results are as follows: First, unlike the U.S.,aggregate net flows of equity funds increase steeply when the performance of large-sized fundsincreases. Second, the effects of fund size and age exist in flow-performance relationship. Thatis, the relationship between performance and flow is strong in the large-sized funds andyoung-aged funds. Third, regardless of cash flow measures, this study finds evidence of convexityin the performance-flow relationship. Fourth, using switching regression models, we re-examinethe relationship between performance and flows of fund groups divided by fund size and age. We find that each group shows its own relationship. Surprisingly, only the large-sized fundportfolio shows convex relationship between performance and market share change, but notthe small-sized fund portfolio. Although both young- and old-aged fund portfolios show convexflow (and market share change)-performance relationship, the stronger is the young-aged fundportfolio. This could be addressed by a unique feature of the Korean fund market. Due to thepromotion of sales forces and investors’ preference, large-sized and young-aged funds play thelead in the Korea fund markets. This feature makes the flow (and market share change)-performance relationship even stronger in the large-sized and young-aged equity funds. Ourstudy contributes to extant literature in that we interpret the convex flow-performance relationshipin the unique Korean context.
