학교수학에서 무리수 도입으로 인한 담론 변화 분석: 공약불가능성의 수학사적 의의를 중심으로 (Analysis of Discourse Changes due to the Introduction of Irrational Numbers in School Mathematics: Focusing on the Historical Significance of Incommensurability in Mathematics)

초록

본 연구는 무리수의 기원인 공약불가능한 양의 발견 방식과 이 양의 발견으로 인한 그리스 수학의 변화에 대해 Sfard의commognitive 관점에서 살펴보았다. 또한 수학사에 비추어 무리수의 도입으로 인한 학교수학 담론의 변화에 대해 알아보았다.
분석 결과 그리스의 공약불가능한 양의 발견은 경험적 수학에서 형식적이고 이론적인 수학으로 변화하는 계기가 되었으며, 수학의여러 개념과 비례이론 및 수학적 도구의 역할 변화를 가져온 사건이었다. 즉, 공약불가능한 양(incommensurable magnitude)의발견으로 그리스 수학은 이전과는 공약불가능한 담론(incommensurable discourse)으로 전환되었다. 이러한 수학사의 변화는무리수의 도입으로 인한 학교수학의 담론의 변화에서도 유사하게 나타난다. 학교수학에서 무리수 도입은 수에 대한 형식적인정의 방식이 적용되고 수와 넓이 개념 변화의 계기가 되었으며 이전의 담론과 모순처럼 보이는 내러티브가 나타나는 원인이 되기도하였다. 무리수 도입으로 인해 학교수학의 담론이 이전과는 공약불가능한 담론으로 변화한 것으로 파악된다. 본 연구의 분석은무리수 학습이라는 공약불가능한 담론으로의 이행의 과제를 앞둔 학생들의 지도를 위한 교수학습 방법 설계의 기초 자료가 될수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study examined the method of discovering incommensurable quantities, the origin of irrational numbers, and the changes in Greek mathematics resulting from the discovery of these quantities from Sfard's commognitive perspective. In addition, in light of the history of mathematics, this study looked into changes in the discourse of school mathematics due to the introduction of irrational numbers. As a result of the analysis, the discovery of incommensurable quantities in the history of mathematics was an opportunity to change from empirical mathematics to formal and theoretical mathematics, and was an event that brought about changes in various mathematical concepts, proportion theory and roles of mathematical tools.
In other words, the discovery of incommensurable magnitude transformed Greek mathematics into an incommensurable discourse. These changes in the history of mathematics appear similarly in the changes in the discourse of school mathematics due to the introduction of irrational numbers. The introduction of irrational numbers into school mathematics resulted in the application of formal definitions of numbers, changed the concepts of number and area, and led to the emergence of narratives that seemed to contradict previous discourses. It is understood that the introduction of irrational numbers has changed the discourse of school mathematics into a discourse that is incommensurable with the previous one. The analysis of this study could be basic data for the design of teaching and learning methods for students facing the task of transitioning to the incommensurable discourse of irrational number learning.
