<쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>의 송시열 형상화 방식 연구 (Study on the method of embodiment of images of Song, Si-yeol illustrated in Sojunghwayeokdaeseol)

초록

<쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>은 조선의 임금과 저명인물의 이야기를 편년체의 양식으로 기술한 역사서사이다. 창작 연대와 작자는 미상이나 충남대학교 소장본의 경우 20세기 초반에 한 여성에 의해 필사된 것이어서 당시 읽을거리로 흥행하였음을 알 수 있다. 효종·현종·숙종대를 다룬 5권에 송시열과 관련된 일화가 다수 등장하는데 조선의 역사를 기술한 전체 분량에 비해 꽤 많은 부분을 송시열의 이야기를 소개하는 데 할애하였다.
송시열은 학문적 소양을 바탕으로 상당한 정치적 영향력을 행사하였기 때문에 <쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>에 여러 차례 등장한다. 그런데 이 작품에서는 송시열의 긍정적인 면모를 형상화하는 데 집중하여 사건을 조직하려고 한 작자의 의도가 엿보인다.
첫째, 송시열이 올렸던 수많은 상소 중에서 몇 가지 상소문만 선택하여 제시하거나 긴 상소를 축약하여 소개하기도 하였다. 송시열이 신덕왕후의 종묘 배향을 청했던 상소나 제자인 윤증을 두둔하는 상소를 자세히 제시하였다. 또한 기해예송 당시 며칠 동안 발생했던 사건과 그에 따른 상소문을 송시열에게 유리한 방향으로 편집하여 보였다.
둘째, 송시열과 임금의 친밀한 관계를 부각하였다. 다소 무리한 부탁이었음에도 불구하고 숙종의 윤허를 받는 장면과 송시열의 학문적 능력에 대해 숙종이 매우 흡족해 하는 장면을 통해 송시열에 대한 임금의 총애를 표현하였다. 뿐만 아니라 효종이 정치적 입장을 함께 한 송시열을 전폭적으로 지지하였다는 일화도 함께 배치하였다.
셋째, 시간적 순서를 역전하기도 하고 특정한 소재를 바탕으로 사건을 대응시키기도 하였다. 윤증과의 불화가 어떻게 시작되었는지를 설명하기 위해 현재의 사건 사이에 과거의 사건을 배치하였다. 또한 송시열의 등장과 죽음 부분에 동일한 소재를 활용하여 송시열의 떳떳한 면을 부각하려고 하였다.
이러한 형상화 방식을 통해 <쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>의 작자는 송시열의 정치적 영향력을 부각하였고 그에 대한 왕의 총애를 집중적으로 표현하였으며 그의 대인적 풍모와 인품을 강조할 수 있었다. 이처럼 <쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>의 작자는 조선의 역대 임금과 저명인물의 이야기를 풀어내는 과정에서 송시열을 우호적인 인물로 인식하고 실제 역사 속에서 그의 긍정적인 면모를 드러낼 수 있는 일화를 선별하여 소개하였다.

영어초록

Sojunghwayeokdaeseol is a historical narration that disclosed the origin and history of Joseon Dynasty and described the events of the time with focus on illustrious retainers and eminent persons. Song, Si-yeol, who was the leader of Noron faction, frequently appears in Sojunghwayeokdaeseol due to exercising of his significant political influences on the foundation of his in-depth academic attainment. However, it is possible to have glimpse of the intent of the author to organize events by focusing on embodiment of affirmative aspects of Song, Si-yeol.
First, among the countless numbers of appeals Song, Si-yeol made to the King, only several were selected and presented or lengthy appeals were condensed and introduced. For example, appeals of Song, Si-yeol to request enshrining of Queen Shindeok at Jongmyo (royal ancestral shrine) and siding with his student Yoon-jeung are presented in detail. In addition, the incident that broke out for several days at the time of Gihaeyesong was edited and illustrated in the manner that is advantageous to Song, Si-yeol.
Second, it highlighted the close relationship between Song, Si-yeol and the King. It expressed affection of king towards Song, Si-yeol by depicting the scene of acquiring the approval of King Sookjong in spite of somewhat unreasonable request he made and scene in which the King Song illustrated high level of satisfaction of the academic competencies of Si-yeol. Moreover, it arranged the story that King Hyojong provided full support for Song, Si-yeol for having pursued political stances that are the same as those of the King.
Third, the author reversed temporal order and dealt with events on the basis of specific material. In order to explain how discordance with Yoon-jeung began, the author arranged the past incident between the incidents of the present. In addition, the author attempted to highlight the honorable aspects of Song, Si-yeol by utilizing the same materials in the portion on the appearance and death of Song, Si-yeol.
The author of Sojunghwayeokdaeseol, through such embodiment methods, was able to highlight the political influences of Song, Si-yeol. Moreover, the author concentrated in illustrating the firm affections that King had towards Song, Si-yeol, along with emphasis on the magnanimous presence and personality of Song, Si-yeol. As such, the author of Sojunghwayeokdaeseol recognized Song, Si-yeol as a friendly person in the process of telling stories on the past Kings and eminent personalities of Joseon Dynasty, and selected and introduced stories in the actual history that would illustrate affirmative aspects of Song, Si-yeol.
