초록

외국인 노동자 문제는 소설, 드라마, 영화 등 다양한 매체를 통해 조명되고 있는 한국 사회의 대표적인 사회 문제 중 하나다. 이 중에서도 소설은 외국인 노동자들의 삶을 다각도로 그려내고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만한 매체다. 단순히 노동의 문제만이 아니라 차별과 혐오의 문제, 혼혈아의 디아스포라 문제 등 다양한 문제들을 노동 문제와 함께 다루기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 외국인 노동자 문제를 다루는 소설들 중 다수가 ‘외국인 근로자 고용법’의 제정 이후인 2000년대에 창작되었다는 사실은 이 시기의 외국인 노동자 문제가 다른 시기에 비해 더 노골적으로 존재했었음을 의미할 것이다. 그렇다면 2000년대의 다문화소설들은 외국인 노동자 문제를 어떻게 다루고 있을까? 장소의 정체성은 그 장소에 소속된 인물 혹은 소속되고자 하는 인물의 행동과 심리를 통해 정의된다, 이는 동일한 공간이더라도 인물에 따라 공간에 대한 인식이 다를 수 있음을 의미한다. 이에 본고는 2000년대 다문화소설 속의 외국인 노동자들이 어떠한 정체성을 지니고 있는지 살펴보고, 그러한 정체성이 노동공간을 어떻게 인식하도록 만드는지 혹은 정체성이 노동공간에 의해 어떻게 변화하는지를 분석해 보았다.
노동공간은 자본을 우선하는 공간이란 점에서 모든 노동자들을 타자화시키는 공간이라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 한국인들과 달리 외국인 노동자들은 노동공간에서 추가적인 타자화를 겪으며 소외된다. 물리적으로는 자본가에 의해 불법체류자로 전락하여 노동공간을 탈출할 수도, 그렇다고 차별과 억압에 저항할 수도 없는 상태에 놓인다. 한국인 노동자들 또한 일자리를 빼앗기지 않기 위하여 외국인 노동자들에게 차별을 가하는데, 이로 인해 외국인 노동자들은 최하위계급으로 전락하는 정신적 타자화를 겪기도 한다.
외국인 노동자들은 물리적․정신적 타자화라는 중층적 타자화를 겪으며 인간성․주체성․정체성을 상실한다. 이는 자아실현을 위해, 그리고 불법체류자가 되지 않기 위해 노동공간을 벗어나선 안 된다는 강제적인 정주 때문에 발생하는 것이다. 노동공간에 귀속되지 않는다면 발생하지 않을 문제라는 점에서 이는 공간이 이주노동자들에게 영향을 주고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 노동공간이 인종을 계급화하고 외국인을 범죄자로 만들어 착취하는 세뇌의 공간임과 동시에 감옥으로 작용하는 것이다.

영어초록

The foreign worker problem is one of the representative social problems in Korean society that are being illuminated through various media such as novels, dramas, and movies. Among them, novels are a remarkable medium in that they depict the lives of foreign workers from various angles. This is because it deals with not only the problem of labor, but also various problems such as discrimination and hatred, and the diaspora of mixed-race children. In this regard, the fact that many of the novels dealing with the problem of foreign workers were created in the 2000s after the enactment of the Foreign Workers Employment Act will mean that the problem of foreign workers in this period existed more openly than in other periods. Then, how do the multicultural novels of the 2000s deal with the problem of foreign workers? The identity of a place is defined through the behavior and psychology of the person who belongs to the place or the person who wants to belong to it. This means that even if it is the same space, the perception of space may vary depending on the person. Therefore, this paper examines the identity of foreign workers in multicultural novels in the 2000s, and analyzes how such identities make them perceive the labor space or how the identity changes by the labor space.
Since the labor space is a space that prioritizes capital, it can be said that it is a space that otherizes all workers. However, unlike Koreans, foreign workers are marginalized through additional otherization in the labor space. Physically, they are reduced to illegal immigrants by capitalists, and they are in a state where they cannot escape the labor space or resist discrimination and oppression. Korean workers also discriminate against foreign workers in order to avoid losing their jobs, and as a result, foreign workers sometimes experience mental othering, relegating them to the lowest class.
Foreign workers experience multi-layered othering and lose their humanity, subjectivity, and identity. This occurs because of forced settlement where people must not leave the labor space for self-actualization and to avoid becoming illegal immigrants. In that it is a problem that would not arise if it were not part of the labor space, it can be seen that space is affecting migrant workers. The labor space is a space of brainwashing that stratifies races and exploits foreigners by turning them into criminals, while also functioning as a prison.
