    초록

This thesis is focused on the characteristic features of modernity based on the streets of London which reflect both positive possibilities and negative risks in modern life. The discussion consists of three parts: the urban drainage system and the underground, the scenes of urban nightlife and obscene backstreets, and the nostalgia of the ruins.
London in the Victorian Era kept on presenting last scenes in which the city separated itself from its past as an effort to show the improvements it had made. The urban reformists try to understand the time they belong to as an independent history after getting the city away from its past. For this, the past continues to be rewritten and enjoy new expressions. Therefore, the past never disappears completely. Rather, the past continues to be drawn out into the present in an obsessive manner to be used to describe the "here and now" that have become significantly different from "there and then. "The past needs to be discussed even when it is necessary to remove its traces, and it continues to be highlighted more and more until it reaches its zenith at the very last moment when it vanishes. The old, however, does not threaten what is new, opening no possibility. A ruined district, an old residential area and people who have lost their home make us foresee images of improvement that fill us with joy. They work on us as a sign showing that something new will soon appear right before the eyes of the general public.
The streets of London in the 1860s and 1870s generally presented us with a vision of a huge physical transformation which was something in which movement, diversity and change were interfused. The images that represent modern London do not extract only a certain moment or a certain aspect. Visualization of the conditions of a new era with the two tenses, past and present, rather than a presentation of the contemporary with integrated time were the method by which modernity was represented in the London of the late 19th century.
