초록

In the 20th century‘ the status of women painters has risen along with the increased participation of women in society. And yet, there are difficulties for the study of them before the 20thcentury since there were few women painters and relevant research materials are scarce.
Impressionism, which emerged during the progress of modemization after the French Revolution, did not violently refuse or strictly constrain the panicipation of women in painting because it rejected existing academic arts itsel f. Thus, there were a few female Impressionist painters although their paintings overlapped in subject matters and had clear limitations since it was a time when women had difficulty participating in social activities. Since the existence of women painters in the Impressionist groupdid not necessarily mean that they were welcomed, they worked in limited areas with the recommendation of male painters. Therefore.
painting works of female painters were not active or individualistic and their works \yere also underestimated because of narrow perspectives widespread during the time.
Since Mary Cassatt took things that are frequently seen around as her subject matters. her models were also relatives and friends. It is possible to analyze the aspects of society of that time through the scenes of daily lives of women in their homes and limited social areas. Although there are limitations in terms of number of paintings and scope of expression when compared with other male Impressionist painters‘ her paintings have value in that they specialized in lives of women and they contain ordinary women seen with eyes of a woman ， not the idealized women.
