한국 바이오 벤처기업의 기술혁신과 전략적 협력을 통한 글로벌 성장전략: 셀트리온을 중심으로 (Korean Bio Venture Firms’Technology Innovation and Strategic Alliance for Global Growth : Focus on Celltrion)

초록

벤처기업은 기술혁신기반의 경쟁우위를 창출하여 지속적인 경제성장에 기여한다. 최근 전 세계적으로 코로나 바이러스의 확산으로 인하여 바이오 벤처기업에 대한 관심이 더욱 높아지고 있다. 본 연구는 전략경영과 자원준거이론의 시각에서 한국의 대표적인 바이오 벤처기업인 셀트리온의 글로벌 성장과정에 주목하여 동인을 분석하고 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 셀트리온은 불확실성과 위험이 높은 바이오산업에서 혁신기반의 기술 리더십과 공격적인 투자를 통한 성장전략으로 글로벌 시장에서 경쟁력 있는 차별적 포지션을 구축하고 있다. 셀트리온의 성장전략에 대한 분석을 통해 다음을 확인하였다. 첫째, 성장잠재력이 높은 바이오산업에서 설립초기부터 최고경영자의 글로벌지향과 위험감수지향의 리더십을 바탕으로 해외시장 진출을 적극적으로 추진하는 태생적 글로벌(Born global) 국제화 전략을 추진하였다. 둘째, 셀트리온은 상대적으로 자원이 부족한 벤처기업의 속성을 극복하고자 국내·외에서 전략적 제휴와 협력을 통한 오픈이노베이션 전략을 추진하였다. 성장과정 단계별 효과적인 협업 확대로 지식과 경험을 축척하고 협력을 점차 주도함으로써 글로벌 경쟁력 제고를 견인할 수 있었다. 또한 해외기업의 인수 등으로 국제화 전략의 수준도 확대되고 있다. 셋째, 후발주자로서 업의 속성을 고려하여 글로벌 선도기업과의 직접적인 경쟁보다는 바이오시밀러 분야에 선도자로 진입하여 집중화하고 기술혁신을 통해 차별화된 제품개발을 통해 핵심경쟁력을 단계적으로 강화하는 전략을 추진하였다. 넷째, 우리나라 정부의 벤처기업과 바이오산업의 육성정책의 기회를 효과적으로 활용하여 코로나 바이러스 항체개발 과제 등에 주도적으로 참여하고 동시에 해외 현지정부 및 이해관계자들과의 우호적인 관계 구축을 통해 시장지배력을 강화하였다.
본 연구는 한국의 대표적인 바이오 벤처기업의 성장 동인에 대한 사례분석을 통해 본 글로벌 벤처기업이 해외시장에서 성장하기 위한 전략적 협업, 국제화 전략 및 정부정책의 중요성을 주장한 기존 실증연구를 확인한 것에 의미가 있다 할 것이다.

영어초록

Venture Firms are major drivers of sustainable economic growth, and core competencies through R&D and technological innovation are the source of competitive advantage. Recently, due to the recent spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) around the world, biotechnology has been kept high attentions. From the perspective of strategic management and resource-based theory, this study analyzes the global growth path and drivers of Celltrion, a leading bio-venture firm in Korea, and then points out key managerial implications. Celltrion builds a competitive strategic position in the global market with innovation-based technology leadership and aggressive investment in the risky biotech industry.
The key implications of Celltrion case analysis are as follows. First, from the beginning of establishment, company with the strong global oriented and risk-taking CEO leadership pursued a born global internationalization strategy that actively has promoted foreign market entry in the bio industry with high growth potential. Second, Celltrion took an open innovation strategy through strategic alliances and cooperation (CMO, CDMO) to overcome risky, lack resources and high entry barriers. In particular, by accumulating knowledge and experience through effective collaboration in each stage of the growth process, and gradually initiating the strategic cooperation, it was able to drive the enhancement of global competitiveness. Third, considering the nature of the business as a follower, it promoted a business strategy to strengthen core competitiveness step by step through the development of differentiated products in the bio-similar field through technological innovation rather than direct competition with global leading players. Fourth, Celltrion has strengthened its market dominance by effectively aligning the opportunities of the Korean government's promotion policies for venture firms and bio industry, and also establishing friendly relationships with overseas local governments.
This study is so meaningful to confirm the previous empirical research that the strategic collaboration, global strategic choice, and government policy in global venture firms are important for growth through case analysis on the growth strategy of Korean leading bio venture firm.
