감각중심 디지털 문화와 포스트휴먼 징후로서 ‘호모 센수스(homo sensus)’의 출현 (Sense-concentrated Digital Culture and the Advent of Homo Sensus as Posthuman Symptom)

초록

이 논문은 디지털 테크놀로지의 발달과 더불어 감각의 활용이 극대화되고 융합감각의 결정체로 존재하는 포스트휴먼화 과정에 인간이 놓여있다는 전제하에이때의 인간을 ‘호모 센수스(homo sensus)’로 명명하고 이 호모 센수스의 포스트휴먼적 존재 조건과 양태에 대해 감각이론을 중심으로 탐구하고 있다. 사회의‘감각적 전회(sensual turn)’가 전면화되는 문화변동의 현실을 목격하면서 먼저, 감각의 문화사회학을 위한 이론적 토대를 다지기 위해 시각과 촉각의 의미, 촉각의 사회성 등에 대해 탐구하였다. 디지털 기기의 사용과 더불어 감각의 매개가 중요해지는 지금의 인간 존재 양태를, 인간과 기계가 형성하는 공감각(synesthesia), 디지털 기기를 통해 소통하는 인간의 사회적 정동(affect)의 층위, 디지털 문화 세대의 스타일과 정서의 조합과 구성에 감각이 동원되는 양상 등에 초점을 맞추어 예시적으로 살펴보았다. 이 연구에서 호모 센수스에 주목하는이유는 디지털 시대의 문화적 조건이 인간의 감각세계와 감각에 대한 집중도와세정도(high definition), 확산도에 있어 이전의 인간이 경험하던 차원과 획기적으로 달라지고 있기 때문이다. 감각 사회학의 이론적 토대 마련을 위하여 짐멜로부터 시작하여 최근의 사회과학에서 감각 연구(sensory studies)로 집약되고 있는 감각에 대한 다양한 논의를 링기스, 크래리, 하위즈 등을 중심으로 살펴보고, 감각 비율의 변화, 감각과 신체와의 관계에 대한 매클루언의 ‘미디어로서 인간’ 에 대한 이해를 비롯해서 젠킨스의 융합문화, 그리고 헤일즈의 포스트휴먼 논의등 관련 이론을 재검토해보면서 호모 센수스 등장의 징후와 관련한 설명틀을구축하려 시도하였다.

영어초록

This paper studies the conditions and modes of existence of Homo Sensus as the posthuman with the theories of senses under the hypothesis that the human is in the process of posthumanization while the utilization of senses is maximized and so that the human exist as the composition of converged senses according to development of digital technology. Paying attention to the cultural changes emerged by ‘sensual turn’, the meaning of visibility and haptic sense, sociality of touch are examined for the theoretical basis to establish the cultural sociology of sense as the first step. For the analysis of the mode of existence of homo sensus, synesthesia between the human and machine, the formation of social affect by the communication with digital devices and applications, and the phenomenon of mobilization of senses for the forming of style and sensation in the generation of digital culture are dealt with as important contents in this study. The reason why homo sensus becomes the central theme in this paper is that the cultural conditions in digital era are epoch-making in the level of concentration, high-definition and extension about senses and sensual world of the human. For the formation of theoretical basis for sensual sociology, various discussions about senses and sensory studies in social sciences from Simmel to Lingis, Crary, Howes & Classen are reviewed. Furthermore, the ratio of senses and the relation of senses and body in the context of ‘the human beings as media’ in the writings of McLuhan, convergence culture of Jenkins, and the discussion on the posthumanism of Hayles give inspiration for the formation of the theoretical framework to this study. The aims of this study lie in the formation of theory of homo sensus aa posthuman which can serve as basis for future case studies as empirical researches, so the importance of this paper can be found in the fact that this trial for the theory building is the first step to earn the precise understanding on the society of senses.
