18~19세기 永川 鄭世雅 후손들의 請諡와 門中 활동 (Asking the Government to grant the Ancestors the Posthumous Epithets(請諡) of the Descendants of Se-ah Jeong in Yeongcheon and Clan Activity)

초록

본 연구는 다음과 같은 질문에서 시작되었다. 조선후기 영남 사족사회에서 請諡가 활발했는데, 그들은 왜 諡號를 청원했는가, 조상의 시호를 받기 위해 후손들은 어떤 노력을 했는가, 청시의 전개 과정은 어떠한가, 조상에게 내려지는 시호가 후손들의 삶에는 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가 등이다. 이 질문에 답하기 위해 영천의 烏川鄭氏가 그들의 先祖 鄭世雅 · 鄭宜藩 父子에 대해 청시한 사례를 살폈다. 여기서 다룬 내용과 결론을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
오천정씨는 18~19세기 10여 차례 이상 정세아와 정의번의 諡號와 旌閭를 내려달라고 상소했다. 정세아에게는 ‘倡義해서 城을 회복한 功’으로 시호를 내려주고, 정의번에게는 나라를 위해 목숨을 바치고 아버지에게 효도한 功으로 정려를 내려달라고 했다. 반세기에 걸친 수 차례의 상소로 정의번에게는 1784년 정려가 내려졌고, 정세아에게는 1788년 시호가 내려졌다. 그럼에도 불구하고 오천정씨의 청시 활동은 끝나지 않았다. 19세기에는 후손들과 영남의 사족들이 연명의 형태로 정의번의 시호와 그와 함께 경주성에서 죽은 奴 億壽의 旌表를 요구하는 상소를 올렸다. 후손들이 상소할 때는 50~120여명이 연명했고, 영남의 사족들이 상소할 때는 300~500여명이 연명했다.
오천정씨가 이처럼 오랜 시기에 걸쳐 많은 인원을 동원해서 청시를 추진한 이유는 무엇일까? 그것은 조상을 顯彰하고, ‘百世不遷’의 宗家를 공식적으로 인정받기 위해서이다. 종가는 크게 大宗家와 小宗家로 나눌 수 있는데, 대종가는 ‘백세불천’의 신위를 모시고 있어야 하며, 소종가는 4대가 지나면 신위를 遞遷한다. 시호를 받은 조상의 신주는 체천하지 않아도 되기 때문에 조상의 시호가 내려지면 나라로부터 대종가를 공식적으로 인정받게 되는 것과 마찬가지이다. 조상에게 내려지는 시호는 후손과 문중의 위상을 높여줄 수 있었다. 그래서 후손들은 조상 가운데 행적이 뚜렷한 인물의 청시를 활발하게 전개했던 것이다.
한편 오천정씨가 여러 차례에 걸쳐 수십 고을에서 수백 명이 연명한 상소를 올릴 수 있었던 것은 학연 · 혈연적 기반에서 비롯되었다. 16~17세기 오천정씨의 학연은 ‘旅軒學團’로 상정할 수 있으며, 혼인은 영남 중부지역에 거주하는 성씨들과 빈번하게 이루어졌다. 그런데 17세기 후반부터 오천정씨 가운데 ‘葛庵學團’에 속하는 인물이 많이 배출되었으며, 혼반도 영남 북부지역으로 확대되었다. 그들은 넓어진 인적 교유망을 기반으로 영남 사족의 ‘연대’를 통해 문중의 숙원 사업 가운데 하나인 청시를 활발하게 전개할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study was began from the following questions. Asking the government to grant the ancestors the posthumous epithets(請諡) was active in Yeongnam's noble society in the late of Joseon Dynasty. Why did they ask the government to grant the ancestors the posthumous epithets? What kinds of efforts did descendants make to receive the ancestral posthumous epithets? What is the development about asking the government to grant the ancestors the posthumous epithets? How did the ancestral posthumous epithets have the effects on the descendants' life? To answer the above questions, Ocheon Jeong clan in Yeongcheon examined the cases to ask the government to grant the father and the son of Se-ah Jeong and Eui-beon Jeong who are his ancestors the posthumous epithets. The summary of the content which were handled here and the result are as follow:Ocheon Jeong clan appealed to the government to ask the government to grant Se-ah Jeong and Eui-beon Jeong the posthumous epithets and official commendation and granting the title giving credit for him(旌閭) more than 10 times in the 18th ~ 19th centuries. Mr. Jeong asked the government to grant Se-ah Jeong the posthumous epithet because he regained the castle by raising an army in the cause of loyalty and to do Eui-beon Jeong official commendation because he gave up his life for his country and was good to his father. Official commendation was granted to Eui-beon Jeong received in 1784 by the several appeals for 50 years and the posthumous epithet called 'Gangeui' was done to Se-ah Jeong in 1788. Despite of them, asking the government to grant the ancestors the posthumous epithets by Ocheon Jeong clan had not been finished. In the 19th century, the descendents and the noble society in Yeongnam again appealed to the government to ask the government to grant Eui-beon Jeong the posthumous epithet and to demand praising the good deed and giving wider publicity to it(旌表) of Eok-su Rho who died with him with the form which writes the names of more than two persons in one place (聯名) seven times. When they appealed to the government, 50~120 persons wrote their names in one place and when the noble persons did, 300 ~ 500 ones did them in it.
Why did Ocheon Jeong clan promote asking the government to grant his ancestors the posthumous epithets by bringing the many persons for a long time? He did all the things to show his ancestors(顯彰) and to receive attention of the 'eternal(百世不遷)' head family(宗家) officially. The head family is largely divided into the big head family(大宗家) and the small head family(小宗家). The big head family should keep the an eternal ancestral tablet and the small head family moves it to the oldest son's house when four generations pass. The government officially recognizes the big head family because the ancestors who receive the posthumous epithets don't need to move the ancestral tablet. The posthumous epithets of the ancestors raise the descendents' status. Therefore, the descendents actively asked the government to grant the ancestors whose whereabouts are clear the posthumous epithets.
The human base that Ocheon Jeong clan appeal to the government with the document that hundreds of persons in dozens of villages is based on the school and blood ties. The school ties of Ocheon Jeong clan in the 16th ~17th centuries can postulate 'Eohyeonhakdan(旅軒學團)' and people in it repeatedly married the family who lived in the central area of Yoengnam. But it is academically based on 'Galamhakdan(葛庵學團)' in the second half of the 17th century and marriage was extended to the northern area of Yeongnam. They could develop asking the government to grant the ancestors the posthumous epithets through the connections of the noble society of Yeongnam.
