칼빈의 제네바 혼인개혁: 세 가지 국면과 공공신학적 의의 (Calvin’s Genevan Marriage Reformation: Three Aspects and Public Theological Significance)

초록

16세기 종교개혁의 영향은 기독교 신앙의 개혁을 넘어 개개인의 삶과 사회제도의 변화까지 미쳤다. 혼인개혁은 이러한 종교개혁의 총체적 영향의 단적인 예이다. 중세 교회법과 성례적 혼인관의 혁파를 중대한 목표로 삼은 관료적 종교개혁자들의 혼인개혁 프로젝트를 가장 잘 보여주는 것이 바로 칼빈의 제네바 혼인개혁이다. 본 논문의 목표는 칼빈의 제네바 혼인개혁의 세가지 국면들을 살펴보고 이로부터 공공신학적 의의를 고찰하는 것이다.
칼빈은 제네바 혼인개혁을 크게 세 가지 국면들로 진행하였다.
첫째, 법적인 국면으로, 칼빈은 교회법 상 혼인규율을 대체할 새로운 혼인법으로 1545년에 제네바 혼인조례를 제정한다. 새로운 혼인조례는 교회법의 성례적 관점을 배격하고 혼인의 사적 계약으로서의 성격과 공적 사건으로서의 성격을 강조하면서 결혼, 성, 가족에 대한 새로운 개신교적 기준들을마련하였다.
둘째, 기구적 측면에서, 칼빈의 강력한 요청으로 설립된 제네바 장로법원이 혼인개혁을 추진하는 핵심적 기구로서 영적 권위와 목회적 기능을 담당하였다. 하지만, 사법적 관할권을 지닌 시평의회와의 관계 속에서 실질적권징권의 확보를 놓고 오랜 시간 갈등을 빚었다. 장로법원은 혼인개혁이란 구체적 삶의 개혁에서 두 왕국론적 틀의 수정이 불가피함을 말해주는 역동적 지표이다.
셋째, 신학적 국면에서, 칼빈은 혼인개혁의 후반부에 언약적 혼인신학을 통해서 혼인의 영적 의미와 구원적 가치를 회복시킨다. 혼인은 하나님이설립하시고 주재하시는 신적 제도이며, 인간들 사이의 다른 모든 계약들보다 우월한 하나님의 언약으로서, 혼인언약으로 결속한 남편과 아내는 깨어질 수 없는 연합을 이룬다고 본 것이다.
이러한 국면들을 살펴보건대, 칼빈의 제네바 혼인개혁은 개신교 혼인신학과 혼인제도의 초석을 놓았을 뿐만 아니라, 더 나아가 두 왕국론을 수정하여 모든 창조세계에 대한 하나님의 주권과 섭리를 확신함으로 기독교 신앙과 공동체와 삶의 공공성을 고백하고, 사회와 문화의 전 영역에서 기독교의신념과 가치를 실현하는 공적 참여를 개혁교회의 사명으로 인정하는 개혁주의 전통 형성에 공헌했다.

영어초록

The wave of the 16th century Reformation went beyond the reformation of Christian belief and had a decisive effect on the change of individual life and the social system. Marriage reformation exemplifies how far-reaching the Reformation had influenced. It is a marriage reformation project that demonstrates in three dimensions the magisterial Reformers’ struggle to break down medieval canon law and it’s sacramental view of marriage.
The goal of this article is to examine the three aspects of Calvin’s genevan marriage reformation and by so doing to consider its public theological significance.
Calvin addressed Genevan marriage reformation in three aspects.
First, in a legal aspect, Calvin legislated 1545 Marriage Ordinance to substitute for the regulations of marriage in medieval canon law. Newly established Marriage Ordinance denounced the sacramental view of marriage and emphasized both the contractual and the public character of marriage. By so doing Calvin grounded the new Reformed norms of marriage, sex, and family.
Second, in an institutional aspect, the Genevan Consistory, which was founded by Calvin’s firm demand, played a vital role in marriage reformation with spiritual authority and pastoral responsibilities. However, the Consistory came into conflict for almost decades with the small Council, which has a legal jurisdiction, with respect to ecclesiastical discipline. The Consistory is a kind of dynamic indication as to the unavoidability to revise the two kingdoms framework for a concrete life reformation like marriage reformation.
Third, in a theological aspect, Calvin confirmed the sacred and salvific qualities of marriage through his covenantal thinking of marriage in his later time. According to this, as marriage is the divine institute which God instituted and presided by his authority and also God’s covenant which is superior to any other human contracts, the bond and integrity of marriage is inviolable.
Judging from all these aspects, Calvin’s Genevan marriage reformation laid the foundation stone of the Reformed marriage theology and marriage institution. Futhermore, modifying the two kingdoms theory, it contributed to the formation of a feature of the Reformed tradition, that is, to confess the publicity of Christian faith, community, and life with assurance of God’s sovereignty and providence, and thus to recognize the public engagement with social and cultural realms of all the creation as the mission of the Reformed Church.
