2세 후반∼4세 아동의 조음 변이성 연구 (A Study of Articulatory Variation in Typically Developing Children between 2 and 4 Years of Age)

초록

배경 및 목적: 특정 음소나 어휘를 다양한 형태로 산출하는 패턴은 연령이 낮은 아동들의 일반적인 조음발달 특성이다. 동시에 특정 연령이 지난 이후에도 지속적으로 비일관적인 조음 형태를 보인다면 조음음운장애를 의심해볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 음소습득뿐만 아니라 조음 정확도면에서도 비약적인 발달을 이루는 2세 6개월에서 4세 일반아동들을 대상으로 언어학적 단위에 따른 조음 변이성을 측정하여 조음 발달 특성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 방법: 본 연구는 2세 6개월에서 4세 일반아동, 50명을 대상으로 2∼4음절에 해당하는 6개 목표단어를 단어와 문장 수준에서 각각 4회씩 산출하도록 한 후 연령집단과 언어학적 단위에 따른 조음 오류율, 조음 변이성, 조음오류 변이성을 살펴보았다. 결과: (1) 연령이 증가함에 따라 조음 오류율이 감소하였고 조음 변이성 및 조음오류 변이성이 낮게 나타나 일관적인 조음패턴을 보였다. 2세 후반과 3세 전․후반 사이에는 조음 변이성 및 조음오류 변이성이 급격하게 감소하였고 4세에는 안정적인 수행능력을 보였다. (2) 언어학적 단위에 따른 조음 변이성 및 조음오류 변이성 차이는 2세 후반과 3세에서는 나타났으나 4세에서는 나타나지 않았다. 논의 및 결론: 본 연구결과는 연령이 증가함에 따라 조음 정확도가 증가하면서 4세 정도가 되면서 단어와 문장 수준 모두에서 특정 음소 산출에 대한 일관적인 조음 형태를 보여줌을 제안하고 있다. 본 연구는 임상적으로 조음 변이성 및 조음오류 변이성을 통하여 아동의 말 패턴을 평가할 수 있는 기초자료를 제시하고 있다.

Background & Objectives: Inconsistency of articulation is a hallmark of early child speech. As children grow older, their word productions become more consistent. However, children with speech disorders, particularly childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) tend to show a symptom called inconsistency of articulation. The present study investigated the developmental patterns of articulatory variation in typically developing children between 2 and 4 years of age. Methods: The participants in this study were 50 typically developing children divided into 5 age groups (6-month intervals, 10 children per group). The articulatory variation task was used to obtain productions of 6 target words. The task consisted of 2- to 4-syllable words that were systematically manipulated for syllable structures. Children produced each target word first in isolation and then in sentence levels. Three measures, proportion of articulatory errors, articulatory variation, and articulatory error variation were obtained. Results: 1) As children grew older, articulatory variation and articulatory error variation improved. The improvement in articulatory variation and articulatory error variation increased drastically between 2 and 3 years of age, and the performance became stable at 4 years of age. 2) Articulatory variation in terms of utterance length conditions were different in the 2- to 3-year-old groups, but not in the 4-year-old group. Discussion & Conclusion: The articulatory variation task effectively elicited responses from the participants 2 to 4 years of age, and developmental changes in their articulatory variation were observed. In this study, the results show articulatory skills improved as the children grew up and articulatory consistency became stable at 4 years of age in both isolation and sentence levels. The present study provides fundamental data that can be used to identify speech impairments in young children.
