Regarding the final scene of Terence’s Hecyra, there have been attempts to capture its distinctive characteristics as a Roman comedy as opposed to Menander’s Greek original. In that scene we hear that the truth, painstakingly brought to light through the whole play, should not be shared by all the dramatis personae, “as in the comedies where everybody gets to know everything” (866-867). Here the difference between knowledge and appearance, or that between telling the truth and simulating a false appearance seems to be left unresolved. This theme of unresolved contrast has a key to revealing a Roman characteristic of the play.
This article aims to show the following. 1) The theme of unresolved difference between knowledge and appearance is carefully built up throughout the play. 2) The critic of the previous comedies and the omission of the prologue, in which a God tells the story of the play, are both explainable by the reference of this theme. It is possible to interpret that Terence, by this construction of the play, takes a different philosophical position from the Greek original. But one should take into account the fact that even such a position is displayed in the frame of a comedy, and that we have a reason to keep a distance from the seriousness of the position. All in all, on the basis of the difference between knowledge and simulation, the play succeeds in striking a balance between serious philosophy and playful comedy, and this is one of the reasons why this play can be rightfully regarded as a characteristically Roman comedy.
