'섬 정체성'의 지속과 변화 (The Continuity and Change of ‘Island Identity’)

초록

이 글은 종전의 ‘섬(island)’과 ‘아일랜드니스[islandness, 섬성(섬性)]’와 관련된 ‘섬 담론(island discourses)’의 특징과 의미를 비판적으로 검토함으로써 역설적으로 ‘섬’과 ‘아일랜드니스’ 개념 정의와 그 활용의 문화적 특징과 의미를 살펴보는 데 일차적 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 섬과 아일랜드니스, 섬 인문지형, 지속가능성이라는 개념들을 중심으로 섬 정체성의 지속과 변화의 양상과 의미를 심도 있게 고찰하기 위한 이론적, 방법론적 단서를 탐색하고 이러한 개념들의 특징과 활용의 인문학적 성찰을 위한 철학적 논의를 시도하였다. 특히 이 글에서는 ‘섬 담론’을 아우르는 개념으로 ‘아일랜드니스(islandness)’라는 개념을 제안하면서, 이 개념의 문화적 특징과 의미에 대해 중점적으로 다루었다.
이 글은 섬 정체성의 지속과 변화를 이해하기 위해 섬과 섬성 개념에 대한 새로운 정의를 바탕으로, 섬 인문지형과 지속가능성이라는 개념을 상호 관련지음으로써 이러한 개념들 사이의 상호 관련성을 섬과 바다의 맥락에서 이해하고자 하는 목적으로 쓰여졌다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 섬성이라는 개념을 적극 활용하고자 했다.
‘아일랜드니스’는 통상 ‘섬성’(섬性), ‘섬 정체성’, ‘섬다움’ 등으로 번역될 수 있는 용어이자 개념이다. 외견상으로는 다양하고 복합적으로 보이는 섬 담론들은 사실은 아일랜드니스의 실체가 사실상 존재하지 않는 것이기에 정치적, 경제적, 사회적 목적을 위해 조작, 변형된 것이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 섬 담론의 실체보다는 섬 담론이 생산되고, 유통되며, 소비되는 과정에 주목할 필요가 있다. 아일랜드니스의 이러한 측면을 간과한 섬 담론은 사실은 섬과 바다에 대한 현상과 인식을 육지와의 연계성 속에서 이해하고 파악하는 것을 저해하고 방해하기 때문이다. 이런 점에서 섬 담론들이 오히려 섬과 바다의 특징과 의미를 제대로 구현하지 못하는 결과를 초래하는 경우가 허다하다. 특히 이러한 섬 담론들은 주로 육지와 내륙 중심의 중앙집권적 국가와 사회의 정치적, 경제적 이득의 극대화와 무관하지 않은 방향으로 생산, 유통, 소비되고 있으며, 이를 통해 역설적으로 국가의 관심과 지원으로부터 소외되어 고유하면서도 독자적인 섬과 바다 나름의 문화적 권리를 박탈당하고 있는 현실을 드러내는 결과를 초래한다.
이러한 의미에서 아일랜드니스 개념을 어떻게 규정하느냐에 따라 다양한 섬 담론이 사실은 육지 중심의 중앙 집권 정부 또는 국가의 정치적, 경제적 이득을 극대화하는 방향으로 진행되고 있음을 논의하였다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 기존의 ‘아일랜드니스’ 관련 섬 담론들이 어떠한 역사적, 사회적 배경에서 형성, 변화되어왔으며, 그것이 갖는 문화적 특징과 의미는 무엇인가를 현대 한국 사회의 맥락에서 고찰하였다.

영어초록

This article examines the cultural characteristics and meanings of the definition and use of the concepts of ‘island(섬, seom)’ and ‘islandness[섬성(섬性), seomsung)]’ by critically examining the characteristics and meanings of ‘island discourses’ related to ‘island’ and ‘islandness’. To this purpose, I would like to seek theoretical and methodological clues and ways to examine the continuity and change of ‘island identity’ in depth, focusing on the concept of island and islandness, and sustainability, and provide philosophical clues for humanistic reflections on the characteristics and use of these concepts. In particular, this article proposes the concept of ‘islandness’ as a concept which encompasses ‘island discourses’ and focuses on the cultural characteristics and meanings of ‘island discourses’.
This article also aims to understand the interrelationship between these concepts in the context of islands and seas by interrelating the concept of ‘island’, ‘islandness’, ‘island humanities terrain’, and ‘sustainability’ based on a new definition of the concepts of island and islandness to understand the continuity and change of ‘island identity’. To this end, this article tried to actively utilize the concept of ‘island’ and ‘islandness’.
‘Islandness’ is a term and concept that can usually be translated into ‘islandness’,‘island identity’, and ‘islandness’. These diverse and complex island discourses are, in fact, manipulated and transformed for political, economic, and social purposes because the reality of islandness does not exist. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the process in which island discourses are produced, distributed, and consumed rather than the reality of island discourses. This aspect of islandness is overlooked because island discourses actually hinder the understanding of the phenomenon and perception of islands and seas in connection with land. In this respect, island discourses often result in not properly embodying the characteristics and meanings of islands and seas. In particular, these island discourses are mainly produced, distributed, and consumed in a direction that is not irrelevant to the maximization of political and economic benefits of a centralized state and society centered on land and inland, which paradoxically results in the reality of being alienated from the central governmental and national interest and support, and deprived of its own and independent cultural rights of islanders in islands and seas in contemporary Korean society.
Depending on how the concept of islandness is defined, it is intended to reveal that these various and diverse discourses on island and islandness are in fact proceeding in the direction of maximizing the political and economic benefits of the land-centered central government or the state by paying attention to the process of manipulating and transforming various discourses for political, economic, and social purposes, despite the fact that the entity of islandness does not exist or it is fluid and flexible according to changes in the times and spatial conditions of islandness. To this end, this article intends to discuss the existing discourses on island related to ‘islandness’ under the premise that it is essential and urgent to consider what cultural characteristics and meanings are in the context of contemporary Korean society.
