‘영지(靈知)’개념의 분석을 통해 본 성기호설(性嗜好說)의 의미 (The Meaning of the Nature as an Appetite through Analysing the Concept of Spiritual Perception)

초록

본 논문은 다산 정약용의 심성론을 ‘영지(靈知)’라는 개념을 중심으로 분석하여 기왕의 논문들에서 비교적 저평가되었던 다산 ‘성론(性論)’의 지위를 보완하고자 작성되었다. 이전의 많은 연구논문들에서는 기호로서의 ‘성’을 ‘대체(大體)’라는 개념과 동일하게 파악하거나 다산에게 있어 이제 ‘성’이라는 개념이 더 이상 핵심적인 화두가 될 수 없는 것으로 파악하고 있다. 이러한 판단은 ‘기호’로서의 ‘성’에 대한 오해일 뿐만 아니라 다산의 사상을 주자의 ‘내재주의’와 대결시킴으로써 ‘외재주의’로 낙인찍는 동시에, ‘인간에 대한 근원적 불신’과 ‘우리 사상사의 연속성ㆍ정신의 역사성을 부정하는 사상’으로 봄으로써 다산 심성론의 체계는 물론 실학의 유학적 연속성마저 부정하는 데에까지 나아갈 수 있다. 이 글은 이러한 문제의식을 기반으로 하여 작성된 것이다.
필자는 다산의 심성론을 분석하기 위해 적당한 개념이 ‘영지(靈知)’라는 판단 아래에서 이와 유관한 개념들을 추출하여 논의를 전개하였다. 이러한 결과 ‘대체=성’이라는 등식은 성립할 수 없으며 인간의 고유성은 영지에 내함 된 세 요소 가운데 하나인 ‘성’에 있음을 밝혔다. 실재하는 상제를 제시하였다고 하여 종교적 경험의 실상을 언제나 외재적ㆍ타율적으로만 보려는 시각은 바람직하지 않다. 성호좌파의 내력을 담지하고 있는, 즉 ‘인심도심(人心道心)의 논리’와 ‘사천(事天)의 맥락’을 통해 인륜성(人倫性)을 확보하려는 성호좌파를 사상적 내력으로 하고 있는 다산의 사상을 살필 때에는 먼저 그들의 내적 논리를 중심으로 살핀 이후에 서학[천주학] 등과의 외적 논리를 찾아가는 것이 바람직하다고 사료된다.

영어초록

This article looks into the concept of spiritual perception in Dasan. A variety of articles have said that the nature as an appetite should be daeche(大體) or is not the key of the Dasan's thoughts any more. But such an understanding is not correct. These misunderstandings are the ones Dasan had already feared. To make straight them, firstly it must be one of the keys that is to comprehend Dasan’s understanding of human-mind. In addition to this, we should analyse the concept of spiritual perception and relate it to human-body.
Dasan’s understanding of human-mind is as follows: First of all, the human being is a mystic combination of spiritual(incorporeal) with physical (corporeal) existence. The spiritual perception is created through the combination of the seeable with the unseeable. Secondly, The spiritual perception is divided into three concepts which are self-judgeable ability(才), circumstances(勢) and nature(性) conceptually. Self-judgeable ability is once more divided into will-power(能力) and weighing-ability(權衡) which are more critical factors to understand human-mind. Circumstances is divided into a standpoint(地) and a crux(機). Nature is the preference which likes the good and the right, but is ashamed of the evil.
In addition to this process, we have to recognize that because human being is a mystic combination of incorporeal and corporeal existence, human mind must be understanded into incorporeal(道心) and corporeal mind(人心). If so, how is the self-judgeable ability operated in the real circumstances? That depends on the human being itself totally and no one intercepted him at all. This is reason why human being could be punished by heaven. By the way, human being must be social being by Dasan’s theory. Therefore, human being should follow social rules and customs. It is natural that we keep the social promise called propriety(禮).
Finally, from above the description, we can catch that Dasan’s theory goes forward the study on propriety and ritual ceremony. Propriety is originated from human mind and is above human being. So Dasan’s thoughts can be spreaded into the national system and foundation. This national system and foundation is the very confucian politics of the royal road. The realization of confucian politics can be possible, only when we could control our mind and body, and keep our social rules. Between them, we could see the perfect human being and the ideal system of social community.
