바울의 구원에 관한 샌더스의 관점과 존 웨슬리의 신인협동설 (E.P. Sanders' Perspective on Pauline Soteriology and John Wesley’s Synergism)

초록

샌더스의 걸작 ‘바울과 팔래스타인 유대교’ 가 출판된 이래로 바울 신학에 대한 새로운 논의가 시작되었다. 샌더스는 이 저서에서 바울 신학을 해석하는 새로운 패러다임을 제시했다. 종교개혁자에 의하여 의인론으로 구분되는 바울의 구원론은 바울이 당시의 유대교의 율법 과 율법의 행위에 대하여 비판적 시각으로 바라보면서 유대교를 행 위 종교로 이해했는 사실을 전제한다. 그래서 바울은 인간이 ‘율법의 행위’ 가 아니라 ‘오직 믿음으로만 의롭게 됨’ 을 역설하면서 당시의 유대교의 행위종교에 정면으로 맞섰다는 것이다. 그러나 샌더스는 당시 유대교가 그런 종교가 아니었음을 밝히고 또한 바울이 유대교 의 율법과 율법의 행위를 그렇게 이해하지 않았다는 사실을 밝히기 위해 당시의 광범위한 유대문헌들을 조사하였다. 아울러 그는 바울 의 본문들을 이해함에 있어서도 오해가 있음을 밝히려 하였다. 하지 만 샌더스가 조사한 유대교의 문헌에서도 행위심판이 드러나고 있음 에도 그는 유대교가 행위종교가 아니라는 사실을 강변하였다. 뿐만 아니라 신약성경에 나타나는 예수의 유대교에 대한 비판적 언급에 대해서도 충분한 해명을 하지 못했다. 본 연구는 이러한 샌더스의 바울의 구원관에 대한 해석이 존 웨슬리의 신인협동설에서 주장되는 구원의 과정에 대한 이해와 어떻게 다른 지를 비교하였고 웨슬리의 구원관의 특징을 이러한 관점과 비교하여 조명하였다. 웨슬리의 구 원관에서는 하나님께서 선행은총으로 말미암아 타락한 인간에게 하 나님의 형상을 부분적으로 회복시켜 주셨음이 중요하다. 이러한 웨 슬리의 관점은 종교개혁자들의 바울이해에서 벗어나지 않는다. 본 연구논문에서는 웨슬리가 말하는 선행은총의 전제 아래서 성령께서 역사하시는 은혜로 말미암아 인간이 인격적 성결을 이룰 수 있음을 강조하고 있다는 면에서 샌더스가 주장하는 바울의 구원에 대한 이 해와 차이가 있음을 밝혔다.

영어초록

One of the topics still discussed in the field of Pauline studies today is how Paul understood Judaism during his mission. Christian theologians who inherited the tradition of the reformers, such as Luther and Calvin, thought Paul had bitterly criticized Judaism. In the 1970s, however, scholars appeared to question the reformers’ perspective on Paul, and this was triggered by E. P. Sanders's pioneering book entitled Paul and Palestinian Judaism: A Comparison of Pattern of Religion published in 1977. Sanders attempted to capture Paul's contemporary characteristics of Judaism, based on extensive research into Jewish literature in the first century, arguing that the Reformers tended to distort the historical Paul and his understanding of Judaism. On November 4, 1982, James D.G. Dunn joined Sanders’ reconsideration of Paul by presenting the paper entitled “The New Perspective on Paul” at the Manson Memorial Course at The University of Manchester. In this series of discussions, N. T. Wright participated and led a new interpretation of Paul through prolific publication. This trend of Pauline studies is collectively called “the New Perspective on Paul,” and this means that the trend while defining the reformers’ understanding of Paul as “old perspective.” The scholars who claim this new perspective are called the new perspective scholars in the field of New Testament studies. Since the new perspective on Paul is based on an innovative understanding of first century Judaism, it affects not only the reading of the Pauline writings but also of the other texts in the New Testament written within the context of first century Judaism, fostering the new perspectives on Jesus, the Synoptic Gospels, the Fourth Gospel, the Johannine epistles, etc. The primary purpose of this paper is to discuss the theological implications of Paul’s doctrine of justification because the new perspective is particularly critical to the reformers’ interpretation of the doctrine. The perspective presupposes Paul’s positive acceptance of his contemporary Judaism, and interprets Paul’s soteriology as a result of the interaction between God and humans while undermining the concept of salvation as a result of God’s total grace. This further creates difficulties for us to understand John Wesley’s so called “Evangelical Synergism” and risks confusing our biblical view of salvation. Thus, this paper examines the historical process of how the new perspective began and developed, and discusses what problems arise when we take the soteriology of the new perspective. To illustrate one such problem, this paper compares Wesley's perspective of salvation with that of a new perspective highlighting their differences and discrepancies. Finally, the paper discusses the dynamics of Wesley’s doctrines of soteriology and sanctification.
