『맹자』 인용시 연구- 성선설(性善說)을 중심으로 - (A Study on Poems Cited in Mencius - with a Focus on the Theory that Human Nature is fundamentally Good -)

초록

맹자는 자신의 철학이나 사상을 정당화하는 논리에 대부분 『詩經』과 『書經』을 인용하여 논거로 삼거나 주장을 강화하는 데 적극 활용하고 있다. 본 논문은 『孟子』에 인용된 30편의 시 중에서도 성선설(性善說)과 관련하여 인용된 시를 중심으로 그 사상적 배경과 목적, 의의 등을 조명하고, 이 인용시들이 성선설의 논리구조에 어떤 역할을 담당하고 있는지를 고찰한 것이다.
성선설(性善說)은 맹자의 사상적 토대를 이루고 있는 핵심적인 주장으로 이와 관련된 인용시는, 대아(大雅) ᐸ蒸民ᐳ ․ ᐸ旣醉ᐳ ․ ᐸ思齊ᐳ ․ ᐸ文王ᐳ 등 4편의 시들이다. 이 중 ᐸ文王ᐳ은 맹자가 가장 많이 인용한 시로, 전체적으로 총 4회에 걸쳐 인용되고 있으며, 동일한 시구가 2회에 걸쳐 중복 인용되고 있어 그 위상과 중요성을 짐작할 수 있게 한다.
먼저 성선설(性善說)과 관련하여 맹자는, 공자의 인(仁) 사상(思想)을 더욱 진전시켜 인간의 본질인 성(性)을 선(善)으로 규정하였고, 대아(大雅) ᐸ蒸民ᐳ의 시 인용을 통해 그 기원을 언급함으로써 자신의 학설을 강화하고 그 정당성과 전통성에 권위를 부여하고 있다.
다음으로 성선(性善)의 확충과 관련하여 맹자는, ᐸ旣醉ᐳ의 시를 단장취의(斷章取義)하여, 자신에게 고유하게 내재되어 있는 고귀한 천작(天爵)을 자각하고 인의(仁義)를 충족시킬 것을 촉구하고 있다. 또한 대아(大雅) ᐸ思齊ᐳ를 인용하여 문왕(文王)의 수신(修身)의 공효가 제가(齊家)와 치국(治國)에까지 이르렀음을 밝히고, 인간 개개인에서 시작된 사랑이 어떻게 바람직한 이상사회를 형성할 수 있는가를 보여주고 있다.
마지막으로 내성외왕(內聖外王)의 이상적(理想的) 인간상(人間像)과 관련하여 맹자는, 성선(性善)의 선단(善端)을 확충하는 방법이 바로 ‘반구저기(反求諸己)’임을 주장하고 있다. 그는 성선(性善)이 확충되면 그 효과는 천하가 귀의하는 데까지 극대화될 것임을 강변하고, 문왕(文王)을 그 모델로 제시함으로써 성선(性善)에 관한 확실한 근거로 내세우고 있다.

영어초록

Mencius is known to have made active use of poems mostly quoted from The Book of Odes and The Book of Documents to provide grounds for his arguments or reinforce his arguments about the logic to justify his philosophy or ideology. This paper set out to investigate the ideological background, purpose and significance of 30 poems quoted in Mencius in relation to the theory that human nature is fundamentally good and examine the roles of the quoted poems in the logical structure of the theory.
The theory is Mencius' core argument that is his ideological foundation. He quoted four poems related to the theory including Daea Jeumgmin, Gichui, Saje, and Munwang. The same phrases from Munwang were cited two times by Mencius, which helps to estimate its status and importance.
Mencius advanced Confucius' In ideology further, defined Seong that was human nature as good, and mentioned its origin by citing Daea Jeumgmin to reinforce his theory and grant authority to its legitimacy and traditionality.
With respect to the expansion of good human nature, Mencius cited parts of Gichui without taking into consideration its overall meanings, thus inspiring people to realize their unique natural nobility inherent in them and fulfill Inui. He also cited Daea Saje, showing that Munwang's Gonghyo of Susin led to Jega and Chiguk and demonstrating how love, which would begin at the individual level, would contribute to the creation of an ideal and desirable society.
Finally, Mencius maintained that "Bangujegi" should be a method of expanding the Seondan of good human nature with regard to an ideal human image. He persistently argued that the expansion of good human nature should maximize its effects to the point of the entire world's dependence and trust and proposed Munwang as its model to provide a certain ground for good human nature.
These findings indicate that Mencius made active use of poems as grounds for good human nature that was his ideological foundation. He cited the four poems to support his arguments based on the origin of good human nature or facilitate the expansion of good human nature through the realization of natural nobility. His intention behind his citation was also to encourage and promote the will for the practice by introducing a way of expanding good human nature socially by stages or demonstrating the stage of man-Heaven unity achievable through Bangujegi.
