재만조선인을 바라보는 다른 시선: 강경애 재론 (A New Angle into the Koreans at Manchuria in the Colonial Age: Review on Kang Kyeong-Ae)

초록

본고는 작가 강경애의 작품을 해석하는 데 있어서, 기존의 연구에서 평가한 반만항일투쟁에 대한 형상화, 제국주의에 대한 저항의식, 간도 농민들의 궁핍한 삶, 재만조선인 여성들의수난에 대한 깊이 있는 천착 등의 의미들 외에, 강경애가 형식적으로는 검열을 피하기 위해기법적 변용을 시도하였다는 점과 내용적으로는 재만조선인 내부의 분열상을 진실하게 드러내려 했었다는 의도를 새롭게 파악하여 해석하려는 시론이다. 수탈당하는 농민이나 억압 받는여성, 제국주의에 저항하는 민족주의자나 사회주의자만이 아니라, 하나의 인간으로서 재만조선인들, 그 개개인이 다양한 편차를 지닌 삶과 생을 영위해 나가고 있었음을 진실하게 그려내고 있다는 점에서 강경애가 보다 보편적인 성찰의 역량을 발휘했던 위대한 작가였음을 확인하고자 하였다.
본고는 몇 가지 점에서 기존의 연구와는 다른 부분들을 제시하였다. 첫째, 강경애의 만주체험 소설들에서는 실제 현실과는 다른 의미와 비중을 지닌 사건들이 등장하는데, 이것은 그녀가 일상을 더 중시했다기보다는, 거대한 사건을 다만 소문으로 처리하면서 이를 축소할 수밖에 없는 현실의 비극을 더 큰 목소리로 내고자 하였다는 것을 밝혔고, 본고에서는 이 ‘은닉된 저항의식’의 ‘닫힌 목소리’를 ‘상징적 작법’이라 명명하였다. ‘닫힌 목소리’는 아편전매제도와 관련이 되는 ‘등록’의 의미를 통해 배경적으로 이해되는 작가의 진정한 서사적 의도나, <지하촌>의 서사 공간적 배경의 의미를 전도시켜야만 하는 관점과도 연관된다. 둘째, 작가가 재만조선인들의 현실을 다른 인종간의 대립적 분열로 지적하면서 그 분열상을 적나라하게 드러낸다는 점에서, 앞에서 제시한 형식적인 특성과 더불어, 그 정밀한 의도를 심층적으로 읽어야하는 창조적 독법이 다시 필요하다는 점을 강조하였다.
강경애는 당대 재만조선인들이 조선땅에서 민족으로서 지녔던 선험적 삶과 만주에서의 새로운 정착의 현실을 받아들이려는 생이라는 교차적 문화 혼융의 진실한 모습을 형상화하고자하였다. 그리고 그 속에서 분열될 수밖에 없었던 재만조선인의 현실과 제도와의 미묘한 낙차들을 서사 속에 은닉시켰다. 검열을 피하고자 하는 작가의 의지가 ‘닫힌 목소리’라는 ‘상징적작법’으로 실천되었던 것이다. 본고에서는 앞으로 강경애의 간도 체험이 다시 읽혀져야 하는이유를 시험적으로 밝혔다.

영어초록

This article has a purpose of analyzing Kang Kyeong-Ae’s literary works with a new angle. Kang Kyeong-Ae’s novels, which were written at Gando(in Manchuria) in the 1930s, have been seen as the texts of reality reflection,depressed women’s liberation, and so on. I stand a hypothesis that Kang as an intellectual not only described the social and political situation at Manchuria but also had some elaborate intentions for evading detection of the colonial censorship, covering the resistant movement against Japanese Imperialism,and further telling humanities of the Koreans. In order to unveil the facts, the interpretation on her novels should be detailed more, so that we will be able to gain the extensive perspective for fine reading on Diaspora literary texts.
I believe that it could spark the historical significances more than previous studies.
The new and important grounds are below. At first, the writer’s internal meaning under her works are more significant than we have observed in the description of Bong-sik’s death, who is one of the main characters in Human Problems. Bong-sik is a communist against Japanese colonial policies for Manchukuo. He was executed by official authorities in the public and open street, the Kukjaga, which consisted of colonial public offices. However, her text dealt his death with silence. We could have it only from hearsay. Thus,I believe that she had intentions with contradiction, that is, sealed voice and symbolic composition what I call, in order to avoid the censorship. That was the most important skill for creation at that time I argue. Second, Kang had recognized the negative steps fairly which each Koreans at Manchuria were also human with desire, willingness, and deviation. The writer reflected it without adjustment into her literary works, And this was the fact and inconvenient truth that the Koreans at Manchuria actually wanted to conceal. According to 70 한중인문학연구 32Kang’s texts, the Koreans at Manchuria were always divided by different purposes like as the antagonism of one race against another. The discord,division, and mental conflicts rooted into their deep mind. Kang Kyeong-Ae closely considered the facts, and wanted to represent through covered meaning for keeping out of Japanese colonial rules. Due to the cause, we should reread her texts elaborately.
Kang Kyeong-Ae in her literary works dealt with the ethnic life and national life of the Koreans at Manchuria in the 1930s. A lot of truth in those days was written and covered by the writer, and this truth beat against Manchukuo’s ruling power. I argue that the real interpretation about the texts is to understand its inner disproportion, fluctuation, and variation. By doing so, we would be able to assess the texts as a testimony as well as reflection and mediation.
