禪과 書藝의 상관성 연구 (A Study on the Correlativity between Zen and Calligraphy)

초록

서예는 여러 철학과 사상 등과 많은 유기적인 관계를 맺고 형성되어 온 예술이다. 특히 불교와의 연관성은 寫經 및 造像記⋅禪師들의 碑文⋅舍利記⋅舍利銘 등을 통해 경전의 내용이나 행적 등을 기록하는 과정에서 상호 밀접한 관계가 이루어 지다가 서예를 수행의 방편으로까지 여기게 되었다.
특히 선종에서 말하는 般若三昧는 서예에서의 정신적 몰입에도 적용되어 글씨를 쓸 때면 텅빈 마음으로 마음의 본래자리에서 나오는 기운으로 運筆을 할때 물아일체의 寂靜의 세계에 빠져서 無我⋅無念의 상태가 되어 최고의 작품이 탄생하게 되는 것이다. 이는 선에서 말하는 선정삼매에 드는 것과 같은 이치이며, 서예삼매라 불러도 될 것이다. 이러한 물아일체⋅서예삼매⋅사경삼매에 들어 一筆揮之하거나 一字三拜하는 상태는 바로 무념무상의 상태를 화면에 옮긴 것으로 그 결과물은 예술의 최고 경지인 기운생동으로 드러나게 되며 神品으로 인정받게 되는 것이다.
이러한 서예삼매는 禪의 삼매와 더불어 소리없이 하나로 합하여져서 나온 것으로 이는 예술의 필연적인 선택이며, 또한 이는 예술가가 超穎悟性 으로써 획득한 성공인 것이다.
또한 서예를 수행의 측면으로 접근하여 종교행위와 대상으로 삼아 사경을 함은 큰 불사로 여기고, 사찰을 만드는 것과 같은 큰 공덕을 이루는 것으로 여기는 것에서 바탕하여 진행되었으며, 마땅히 서예 또한 佛性의 직접표현이라 여기고 참선하는 것에 비유하여 頓悟식의 깨침과 같이 획을 구사함에 비유하고 있다.
따라서 본고에서는 佛敎와 書藝와의 관계, 禪과 書藝의 상관성, 禪과 書藝의 역설적 관계,書論中의 禪思想을 연관지어 살펴보고 禪筆을 쓴 서예가들을 고찰하여 보았다.

영어초록

Calligraphy is an art which has established much organic connection with many kinds of philosophies and thoughts. The correlation with Buddhism has been made mutually in the process of recording the contents of sutras or Buddhist's achievements, etc, through the copying of sutras, documents about the origin of statues, the epigraph for Zen priests, documents in the sarira casket, and documents carved on the sarira casket. Since then, calligraphy became a means of religious austerities.
Especially Prajna-samadhi(般若三昧) which is called in the Zen sect has applied to the mental absorption in the calligraphy. For writing the characters, if we make the mind empty and handle the brush with the energy from the original place of mind, we can fall into the world of incorporation of objects and ego and can reach in a frame of mind void of all ideas and thoughts. And in that state we can finally make the best work. This is the very same reason as to enter into the perfect state of spiritual concentration in Zen. We can also call it the absorption in the calligraphy.
In the incorporated state of objects and ego, in the perfect state of spiritual concentration on the calligraphy and on the copying of sutras, to write with a stroke of the brush or to kneel down and bow three times after writing a character is the same as to move the state of freedom from all ideas and thoughts into the paper. The result in the paper will reach the best state of writer's art and will reveal the lively motion of the spirits in himself. And the product will receive much recognition of a masterpiece.
The perfect state of spiritual concentration on the calligraphy became one soundlessly with the absorption in Zen. I think this is the necessary choice for art and the fruit of the great wisdom from writer. Calligraphy has been approached on a side view of religious austerities and the copying the sutras was regarded as a kind of Buddhist's Mass, and building of temple was considered as a great contribution for Buddha, as well. So people thought that the calligraphy was the direct expression for the nature of Buddha. They made strokes in writing characters comparing the calligraphy to practice of Zen meditation and then to the sudden enlightenment.
Therefore, In this thesis, I tried to survey the relation between Buddhism and calligraphy, the correlation between Zen and calligraphy, and the paradoxical relation between Zen and calligraphy. I examined the thoughts of Zen in the arguments for the calligraphy and the calligraphers who wrote the calligraphy about Zen.
