광개토태왕훈적비 제1면에 대한 試釋 − 마멸 부분 推讀과 辛卯年條 해석을 중심으로 − (An Interpretation of Section 1 of King Gwanggaeto’s Stele based on Faded Letters and ‘Sinmyo Passage’ / Park, Kwang-Min)

초록

廣開土太王勳績碑는 조선시대에도 기록이 보이지만 1874년∼1875년경에 이 碑가 高句麗의 國罡上廣開土境平安好太王碑라는 것이 밝혀진 이래 東北亞 古代史 연구의 중요한 텍스트로서 韓⋅中⋅日 학자들의 많은 연구 論著가 나왔고, 프랑스의 모리스 꾸랑(Maurice Courant)과 에두아르 샤반느(Édouard Chavannes), 소련의 자릴가시노바(Rosa A Dzarylgasinova) 등 西方 학자들의 踏査와 연구도 더해지며 세계적인 연구대상이 되었다.
碑文 解讀은 연구를 위한 가장 기초적 작업이지만 다수의 글자가 磨滅되었고, 碑面이 떨어져 나간 곳도 많아서 비문을 해독하고 再構하는 것이 쉽지 않다. 1875년 이후 國內外 여러 학자의 연구로 많은 것이 밝혀졌지만, 아직도 未讀字가 적지 않고, 비문 해석에 대해서도 논란이 많다.
그중에서도 제1면의 ‘而倭以辛卯年來渡○破百殘○○○羅以爲臣民’ 記事는 가장 尖銳한 논쟁거리였다. 이 부분을 흔히 ‘辛卯年條 記事’라고 하는데 ‘辛卯年條 記事’라는 표현이 적절한지부터 다시 검토할 필요가 있다. ‘百殘○○○羅以爲臣民’은 신묘년이 아니라 乙未年의 裨麗 토벌 記事 아래에 기록되었고, 광개토태왕이 군사를 일으킨 것도 신묘년으로부터 이미 6년이나 지난 丙申年이기 때문이다.
석회를 발라 碑面의 글자를 變造했다는 事實에 대해서도 끊임없는 논란이 이어져 왔고, 그 주체에 대해서도 많은 의혹이 제기되었다. 歷代 어느 古碑도 석회를 발라 글자를 바꾼 경우가 없었다는 점에서 누가 어떤 목적에서 그랬든 석회를 발라 글자를 變造하고 원래의 字形을 훼손한 것은 비난받아 마땅하다.
本稿에서는 廣開土太王勳績碑의 제1면을 중심으로 未讀字를 試釋하면서, 논란이 되어온 諸說도 살펴보고자 한다. 이 글을 통해 작은 史實이라도 밝혀지는 성과가 있다면 그것은 先學들의 연구에 기초한 것이며, 작은 誤謬라도 있다면 그것은 순전히 필자의 寡聞에서 비롯된 것이다.

영어초록

The record on the Gwanggaeto Stele first appeared in the Joseon Dynasty, and the Stele was identified as the stele of King Gwanggaeto around 1874/75. Since then, the Stele has been invaluable sources for the studies about the ancient history of Northeast Asia. A number of studies and works have been published by scholars from Korea, China, and Japan. It has also become a focal point of international studies since Maurice Courant, Édouard Chavannes, Rosa A. Dzarylgasinova began their studies about it.
Deciphering the letters on the epitaph is the most fundamental procedure for the further studies. However, due to many faded letters and the damaged surface of the Stele, there are difficulties in interpreting and arranging its inscription. Since 1875, a lot of scholars from Korea and other countries have researched and discovered a variety of information. However, numerous letters still remain illegible, so there exist disputes on its interpretations of the epitaph.
The most controversial portion of the inscription has been ‘而倭以辛卯年來渡○破百殘○○○羅以爲臣民’. This portion is commonly named as ‘Sinmyo Passage.’ However, its title may not be appropriate and it is necessary to re-examine the text. The portion ‘百殘○○○羅以爲臣民’ is not inscribed under the passage that describes the year of Sinmyo, but under the passage of the Biri (裨麗) conquest in the year of Eulmi. In addition, it was the year of Byeongsin, 6 years later after Sinmyo, when King Gwanggaeto raised his army.
It has been argued that someone used lime and altered the letters, and has been questioned who it was. There exists no precedent of changing letters on the ancient steles by covering with lime, so it deserves blame for defacing its original text.
This study tries to read and interpret the previously indecipherable letters which appear in the first section of the Gwanggaeto Stele, and discusses some controversial texts as well. It will be thanks to previous studies by other scholars, if this study brings any meaningful insight on the subject. It will be attributed to my lack of knowledge, if there is any error.
