유아다문화교육의 의미 탐색 및 실제적 제언: 석·박사학위논문을 중심으로 (Ascertaining the meaning and practices of multicultural education for early childhood from South Korean doctoral dissertations and master's theses)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 현재 유아다문화교육에서 선택된 다문화교육의 개념과 그 특성파악을 통해 앞으로 유아다문화교육이 나아가야 할 방향에 대한 실제적인 제언을 제공하고자 함이다. 이에 유아다문화교육과 관련된 기존의 석·박사학위논문 총 39편을 선정하여 분석하였다. 연구의 분석틀과 이론적 근거는 문화, 다문화교육의 개념, 그리고 다문화교육의 접근 등을 고찰, 정리하여 사용하였다. 연구결과, 문화에 대한 개념은 주로 한 민족의 생활양식의 총체적 표현이 나타났으며, 다문화교육의 개념은 Banks(1993)의 평등한 교육기회 제공이라는 개념을 가장 많이 인용하면서도 반편견교육과 유사한 개념으로 나타났다. 다문화교육의 목표는 주로 인간관계적 접근으로 초점화되어 있었다. 분석논문들의 활동계획안에 나타난 다문화교육의 목표 및 구성요소는 한국과 다른 나라 문화를 비교해보거나 문화를 소중하게 생각하는 태도 기르기에 편중되어 있었으며, 구성요소별 비율에서 문화와 다양성이 차지한 비율은 총 50% 이상이었다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로 유아를 위한 다문화 교육의 방향성에 대한 실제적 제언을 논의하면, 1) 비선택된 개념에 대한 활성화를 위한 노력, 2) 일회성 활동을 넘어선 다문화 교육: 다문화적 가르침의 문화 만들기 3) 실생활에서 시작된 접근으로 축약되었다.

영어초록

What is the meaning and purpose of multicultural education for children in the Korean educational context? That is a question which Korean educators and policy makers, like those from any country that adopts a multicultural education policy, must continually ask, answer, and assess. From this self-reflective stance, this study aims to provide practical suggestions on the nature of multicultural education for children. To this end, we analyzed 39 master's theses and doctoral dissertations written by Korean students at Korean universities in order to determine how the major concepts, objectives, and contents of multicultural education are usually conceptualized and adopted by Korean researchers. Thus, the focus of our analyses was on the literature reviews and lesson plans of the 39 dissertations. As a framework for content, we found that the researches dealt with the conceptualization of culture and multicultural education and with diverse approaches to multicultural education. With regard to the presentation of culture, fixed and given manifestations of culture such as clothes, architecture and food were prevalent in the lesson plans developed by the researchers. In spite of frequent citing in the literature reviews of Banks' (1993) in-depth conceptualization of multicultural education as ‘equal educational opportunity', the components of anti-bias education are superficially interpreted in developed lesson plans. As a newly adopted concept and/or socialization strategy, meant to be transformative and thus, to expand world-views, multicultural education should aim beyond the limited understanding inherent in one lesson or program which features kimchi, or a few words of Japanese. We recommend an effort be made to ‘create or develop a culture of multicultural teaching' in classrooms. Such a culture supports students’ critical and reflective understanding of their own cultures and welcomes others from different cultures through emotional, social and cultural relationships. In view of this, we would also recommend that early childhood multicultural education needs more attention to realistic topics relevant to children's daily life.
