郭鍾錫의 출판 활동과 俛宇文庫 국내도서의 장서적 의미 (An Implication of Collection for Publishing Activities of Gwak Jong-seok and Domestic Publications of Myeonwoomungo)

초록

이 글은 경상국립대학교 고문헌도서관에 설치된 俛宇文庫의 국내도서가 가진 장서적 가치를 고찰한 것이다. 그 결과 몇 가지 유의미한 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 俛宇 郭鍾錫의 학문 연원과 관련된 도서들이 소장되어 있다는 점이다. 둘째, 곽종석이 간행에 직간접으로 참여한 다수의 서적들이 소장되어 있다는 점이다. 셋째, 현재까지 학계에 알려지지 않은 「宋季元明理學通錄補編」이 소장되어 있다는 사실이다. 넷째, 곽종석을 비롯한 당시 경남 유림이 유교의 부흥과 구국의 실천을 위해 출판 사업에 매진한 사실을 보여주는 서적들이 확인된다는 점이다.
이 중에서 마지막 넷째의 의미는 매우 중요한 점이다. 곽종석이 지은 서문과 발문에서 서적 간행의 의의를 설명할 때 자주 표현되는 단어는 ‘不朽’이다. 19∼20세기에는 실기의 간행이 증폭하고 먼 시기 인물들의 문집 간행이 성행했다. 그 이유는 선현들의 행적과 글들이 민멸되지 않도록 서적을 통해 ‘불후화’를 도모하기 위한 것이다. 비록 한 시대의 어려움으로 인해 유교가 천시되고 국가가 망한 지경까지 이르렀지만 그들은 선현들의 정신과 행적을 담은 서적이 후세에 전해진다면 유교의 道도 끊어지지 않아 ‘머지않아 회복되리라[不遠復]’라는 희망을 품을 수 있었기 때문이다. 유학자로서 시대적 사명감과 헌신적인 실천이 없었다면, 1905년에 곽종석․이도묵․진양하씨 문중 등 진주 유림이 「주자어류」라는 거질의 서적을 중간한 일이나, 1917년에 盧相稷․李炳熹․驪州李氏 문중 등이 「星湖文集」을 간행한 일은 일어나지 않았을 것이다. 그들은 급변하는 근대전환기 속에서 전통 학문이 단절될 것이라는 절박한 위기 의식을 가졌으며 자신들의 시대적 사명을 ‘서적 간행을 통한 불후화’로 받아들인 것이다.
이처럼 면우문고 국내도서의 장서적 의미를 정리해본다면 한 개인의 수집에 의해 모아진 ‘컬렉션’과는 또 다른 가치를 지닌다고 평가할 수 있다. 면우문고에는 원소장자의 학문이 깃들어 있고, 출판 활동의 결과가 담겨 있다. 그리고 그의 손길이 담긴 箚記가 전해지며, 교정한 기록들이 서적에 남아 있다. 곽종석의 학문 정신과 실천이 생생하게 전해지고 있는 곳이 바로 면우문고이다.

영어초록

This article contemplates the collection value found in the domestic publications of Myeonwoomungo installed in the Ancient Literature Library of Gyeongsang National University. As a result, a few meaningful points could be detected. First, it holds the books related to the academic history of Myeonwoo Gwak Jong-seok. Second, it holds a number of books with Gwak Jong-seok directly and indirectly participating in the publication. Third, it is the fact that Seunggyewon-Myeongrihak-Tongrokbopyeon that has yet to be known in the academic circle to this present day is held there. And fourth, it is the fact that there are books that confirmed the fact of Gwak Jong-seok and other Gyeongnam Yurim had full focus on publishing business for the revival of Confucianism and practice of patriotism.
Among them, the implication of the fourth point is extremely important. In the prelude and epilogue written by Gwak Jong-seok, the word frequently expressed when explaining the implication of publication of books is ‘eternal’. In 19∼20th century, the publication of practical chronology had drastically amplified and the publication of the literature collection of people of long ago was popular. The reason is attributable to the search for ‘eternality’ through books not to have the deeds and writings of the ancient sages would not be destroyed. Although Confucianism was looked down and the ruination of the country due to the difficulties of time, they still retained the dream of ‘soon to be restored’ with the continuation of the way of life for Confucianism had their books that contained the spirituality and deeds of their ancient sages would be handed down to the next generations. Hand there is no sense of mission in time and devoted practice as a scholar of Confucianism, the Jeonju Yurim (scholars), such as, Gwak Jong-seok, Lee Do-muk, members of Jiyang Ha clan in 1905, it is quite possible not to have the intermediary publication of books of large volume in Jujaeoryu or publishing of Seonghomunjip by No Sang-jik, Lee Byeong-hee, and other members of Yeoju Lee clan in 1917. They hand the desperate sense of crisis that the traditional academics would be disconnected under the drastically changing modern transition period, and they accepted their mission of time as the ‘eternality through the publication of books’.
As such, when the implication of collection for domestic books of Myeonwoomungo is summarized, it may be assessed that there is a different value from the ‘collection’ that is gathered by an individual collection. Myeonwoomungo has the academic literature of original holder and the result of the publication activities is still contained. And, the memo with his touches has been handed down and the records calibrated are still contained in the books. The place where the academic spirit and practice of Gwak Jong-seok still alive is Myeonwoomungo.
