초록

이 연구는 이화여자대학교 한국음악과의 석·박사학위논문을 중심으로 연구현황과 과제를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1974년 설립된 국악과/한국음악과는 1978년 석사학위과정을, 1988년 대학 국악과 최초로 국악실기 박사학위과정을 개설하였다. 이 연구의 분석대상은 1976년부터 2021년 8월까지 발표된 378편의 석·박사학위논문이다.
석사학위논문은 1970-1980년대 고악보 연구, 정악기악(영산회상, 여민락, 취타 등), 정악성악(가곡, 십이가사), 가야금 산조, 대금산조 연구를 시작으로 1990년대 이후 줄풍류, 의궤 연구, 다양한 악기의 산조, 판소리, 가야금 병창, 민요, 잡가, 시나위, 봉장취, 연희 등으로 연구대상이 확장되었다. 1980년대 중반부터 시작된 창작곡 연구는 황병기 가야금 창작곡 분석연구를 시작으로 점차 다양한 작곡가의 창작곡, 창작곡을 위한 연주법 등으로 연구대상과 연구주제가 확장되었다. 1990년대부터 국악학계 전반의 흐름을 담은 고음반, 북한음악 악곡분석, 근현대 음악사 등의 연구와 시대적 흐름에 따른 실용적이며 현장 중심 연구인 마이킹, 국악정책 등도 발표되었다. 이러한 연구대상과 주제는 각각 101편, 126편으로 가장 많은 졸업생을 배출한 2000년대와 2010년대에도 지속되었다. 박사학위논문은 2002년 최초의 국악실기 박사학위논문 발표 이후 2021년 8월까지 48편의 연구가 발표되었다. 박사학위논문은 석사학위논문에 비해 포괄적인 대상과 주제로 확장되었으나 주요 연구방법은 선율, 조, 악장, 장단 등 음악내적구조 분석, 고악보 수록 악곡비교를 통한 형성과정 고찰, 단일 악곡분석, 악기 간 선율비교, 성악과 기악반주선율비교 등으로 석사학위논문과 유사하다.
실기전공 최초의 석·박사학위과정 개설이라는 앞서가는 행보를 보여준 이화여자대학교 한국음악과는 기악과 성악 분야에서 최초의 학위논문이 다수 발표되고 창작음악 연구에서 두드러지는 성과를 보여주었다. 그러나 실기전공 중심의 연구의 한계를 넘어 한국음악학의 발전에 기여할 수 있는 다양한 연구주제와 확장된 연구시각을 확보하는 일은 중요한 미래의 과제라 하겠다.

영어초록

This paper examines the status of research for M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations in the Department of Korean Traditional Music at Ewha Womans University and its prospects. Established in 1974 within the College of Music, the Department of Korean Traditional Music began its M.A. degree program in 1978. The Department changed its name from Gugak-gwa (department of traditional music) to Hangukeumak-gwa (department of Korean music) in 1980, and its first Ph.D. degree program for majors in musical instruments or voice was established in 1988; most theses and dissertations were written by musicians rather than musicologists. This paper analyzes 378 theses and dissertations from 1976 to 2021.
Research topics of early M.A. theses included old notation, analysis of individual pieces of court and literati music such as Yeongsanhoesang, Jongmyojeryeak, Yeomillak, Boheoja, the gagok classical song cycle, the twelve surviving gasa, and folk music such as gayageum sanjo, pansori, minyo folk songs, and gayageum byeongchang. Early analyses of individual contemporary compositions for traditional instruments have expanded to studies of composers, playing techniques for new compositions and playing techniques. From the 1990s, new topics including North Korean music, modern music history, recording techniques, traditional music-related policy, and others have appeared, paralleling changes in society. Major research methodologies are comparison, analysis of musical elements, and melodic analysis among various instruments in musical pieces.
Since the first Ph.D. dissertation in 2002, a total of 48 dissertations have been published, the subjects and topics broader and expanded compared to M.A. theses. As the first M.A. and Ph.D. degree program offered by the Department of Korean Music at Ewha Womans University, numerous thesis and dissertation “firsts” in several major fields in instruments and voice were published; these were major achievements for the Department of Korean Traditional Music. However, to overcome the limitations of smaller numbers majoring in Korean musicology than instruments and voice majors, expansion of research topics and perspectives remains as imperative in contributing to the development of Korean musicology.
