선비[士]와 리더십의 관계 - 대학생에게 필요한 선비 리더십 - (The Leadership of Seonbi)

초록

이 논문은 선비[士]라는 유교적 지식인과 리더십의 연관성을 연구하고 있다. 이 논문에서 다루는 선비는 주로 『논어』에 나오는 ‘士’를 중심으로 한다.
이 논문은 먼저 선비와 리더십의 관계를 정립하기 위해 기존의 통념에서 벗어나 선비에 대한 새로운 해석을 시도하였다. 그 결과 선비는 ‘있어야 할 것’이 없는 현실세계에서 그것을 있게[十] 하고, ‘없어야 할 것’이 있는 현실세계에서 그것을 없게[一] 하는 사람으로 재정립되었다. 이 아이디어는 ‘士’자가 하나[一]와 열[十]로 구성되어 있다는 『설문해자』의 해석에서 착안하였다. 선비에 대한 이러한 재해석은 ‘도에 뜻을 둔’ 선비와 ‘리더십’의 연관성을 밝히는 중요한 단서가 된다. 세상을 바루고자[匡] 했던 춘추시대의 선비들 역시 리더십 역량을 기르면서[修己] 리더십을 발휘할 수 있는 기회를 얻고자 노력했던[治人] 리더들이기 때문이다.
다음으로 선비와 관련된 『논어』 및 四書의 용례를 조사하여 현대의 리더십 이론에서 말하는 리더십 항목에 따라 그것들을 분류하였다. 다시 말해 존 맥스웰의 ‘21가지 리더십 불변의 법칙’에 해당하는 선비 관련 구절들을 추려내 그것들을 비전 설정, 소통을 위한 자기 계발, 목표를 향한 몰입, 책임감 등 네 가지 항목으로 분류하고 해석하였다. 그렇게 함으로써 현대적 의미에 맞는, 특히 대학생들에게 필요한 선비 리더십의 윤곽을 그릴 수 있었다. 이로써 2천5백년 전에 공자학파가 설파한 선비의 품성과 행동양식이 오늘날에도 리더십의 법칙으로써 유용할 수 있다는 점을 확인하였다.

영어초록

This paper aims to study the relationship between the concept of Seonbi, a Confucian intellectual and that of leadership, one of the most popular topics of the present time. The concept of Seonbi in this paper is centered on that of Shi(士), in the Four Chinese Classics, including Confucian Analects. It also includes the concepts of Ru(儒) in the chapter of “Ru-xing(儒行)” in the Record of Courtesy (禮記) and of Junzi(君子) in Confucian Analects on condition that they provide this paper with contextual supplement.
This paper mainly attempts to re-interpret the concept of Seonbi, breaking away from its conventional interpretation to establish the relationship between the concepts of Seonbi and leadership. The new interpretation indicates that Seonbi is the person who makes ‘what is not in this world in spite of its necessity’ exist, making ‘what does exist in spite of its unnecessariness’ not exist. Such an interpretation derives from the illumination of Seolmunhaeja, which insists that the Chinese character of Shi(士) is composed of two characters, minus(一) and plus(十), respectively meaning ‘one’ and ‘ten’ in Chinese. The re-interpretation of Seonbi as such becomes an important clue to manifest the relationship between Seonbi as a scholar who pursues Tao, the way, and the current concept of leadership. For the people called Seonbi in the warring states period of ancient China, who longed to correct the world, were those who exerted themselves to achieve opportunities for their leadership while training themselves strictly.
In the next part, on the basis of the usages in the Four Chinese Classics mentioning Seonbi, the current concept of leadership is classified in detail according to the items in John Maxwell’s The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. That is to say, the conditions of Seonbi is categorized into four main concepts of the current leadership, including ‘Setting up of Vision,’ ‘Self-development for Communication,’ ‘Immersion for the Goals,’ and ‘Responsibility.’ In so doing, the leadership of Seonbi that fits the present times can be outlined. Thus it is well identified that the attributes and modes of behavior of Seonbi, which was preached by Confucius about 2,500 years ago can be valued as the laws of leadership of the present times.
