심층 이해와 번역 - 학부생 번역과 기계번역을 중심으로 - (A Study on In-depth Understanding and Translation - Focusing on Undergraduate Student’s Translation and Machine Translation -)

초록

본고에서는 문학번역을 대상으로, 원문에 대한 심층 이해의 여부가 번역에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보기 위해 학부생들의 번역과 기계번역의 결과를 고찰해 보았다.
학부생들은 심층 이해에 대한 인식이 희박하여 대체로 축자적 번역을 하였으며 그것은 기계번역의 결과와 큰 차이가 없었다. 그러나 심층 이해가 이루어진 다음에는 창의적이고 개성적인 번역을 함으로써 기계번역과 확실한 차별성과 경쟁력을 보여주었다.
또한 본 연구 과정에서 발견된 중요한 점 가운데 하나는 기계번역이비록 언어 변환 차원의 번역밖에 하지 못하는 한계를 지녔음에도 불구하고, 심층 이해가 필요한 원문에 대해 상당한 품질의 번역을 생산하는 경우가 있다는 것이다. 다만 이 경우는 기계번역이 언어 논리가 잘 통하도록 정제된 번역문을 만들어 내고, 인간의 추론 능력이 개입되었을 때에국한되며, 원문의 의미도 100% 정확하게 번역되는 것은 아니다.
이제 번역에 대한 전문적인 인식 없이 축자적 번역에 그치고 만다면 기계번역과의 경쟁에서 도태될 수밖에 없으며, 다른 한편으로는 언어 변환 차원의 번역을 할 수밖에 없는 기계번역의 한계로 인해 통번역이나 외국어 의사소통에는 여전히 인간만의 영역이 존재한다는 사실을 인식하고, 기계번역에 대한 경쟁력 확보를 위해 과감한 혁신과 새로운 교육의 접목이 필요하다 할 것이다.

영어초록

Machine translation based on AI uses sentence as the unit of translation, not words or phrases, and by considering the correlation between each translation element within a sentence, it is possible to achieve more natural and accurate translation. However accurate meaning understanding is possible through inference because human language have many hidden messages. So translation requires an in-depth understanding.
This study was conducted on three cases(metaphors and idiomatic expressions, pragmatic meaning, cognitive context) that require a deep understanding of the original text, targeting literary translation.
Undergraduates have little awareness of deep understanding, so they mostly did literal translations, which did not differ much from the results of machine translation. However, after deep understanding was achieved, they showed clear differentiation and competitiveness from machine translation by doing creative and individualistic translations.
Machine translation can sometimes produce fairly accurate translations due to the ‘Attention’ feature. However, this is limited to some cases and does not mean that it produces 100% accurate translations.
The following conclusions can be reached when the above review results of this paper are summarized. First, there is little difference from machine translation and human translation without professional recognition of translation. Second, due to the limitations of machine translation there is still a human-only domain in foreign language communication.
In this way, the field of foreign languages is a place where both crisis and possibility coexist, and bold innovation and new education are necessary to secure competitiveness superior to machine translation.
