외국인 학부생의 커뮤니티 통번역 현황 및 요구 조사 분석 (Status and need analysis of international students for community translation and interpretation)

초록

이 연구는 외국인 학부생을 중심으로 커뮤니티 통번역 현황을 조사하고 통번역 시 어려운 점과 커뮤니티 통번역에 대한 요구를 통해 교육적 제언을 하는 데에 목적이 있다. 국내 커뮤니티 통번역 연구는 대부분 여성결혼이민자를 수혜자이자 시혜자로 보고 진행되고 있다. 그러나 현재 커뮤니티 통번역사의 역할은 외국인 학부생에게로 확대되고 있는 추세이다. 이에 이 연구는 학부에 재학중인 외국인 학부생 76명을 대상으로 통번역 경험과 교육적 요구를 조사하였다. 그 결과 한국어문학과 전공생 중 40%가 커뮤니티 통번역의 경험이 있었으며 통역과 번역의 경험 비율은 유사하게 나타났다. 가장 어렵게 느낀 것은 텍스트의 장르별 특징과 문법적 정확성이었다. 또한 앞으로 통번역 관련 수업이 개설된다면 수강할 의사가 있음을 밝혔다. 이 연구는 현실적인 요구를 파악하고 한국어교육학이나 한국어 교육에서 통번역 교육에 접근할 수 있는 방법을 모색했다는 데에 의의가 있다. 앞으로 외국인 유학생을 중심으로 커뮤니티 통번역사의 역량을 강화할 수 있는 연구가 이어지길 바란다.

영어초록

This study aims to investigate the current status of community interpretation for international learners and to provide educational advice through an analysis of the most challenging aspects of interpretation and the needs for community interpretation. Most studies on community interpretation have been conducted on immigrant wives as both providers and receivers of the service. However, international students as well have been considered more recently for the role of community interpreter. Therefore, this study investigated interpretation experience and the need for translation education of 76 undergraduate international students. The results show that 40% of international students enrolled in a degree in Korean language and literature had previous experience of interpretation or translation and that the amount of experience of interpretation and translation was similar. The survey participants individuated the most challenging aspect of translation and interpretation in the text’s characteristics and grammatical accuracy. Additional, they also express interest in the future introduction of a translation/interpretation class. The contribution of this study is represented by the understanding of a pressing need and in outlining a Korean language education-focused approach to translation and interpretation. In the future, more research is needed to strengthen the role of international students as community interpreters.
