대학 신입생 글쓰기에 나타난 문장 오류 양상 분석 (An Analysis of the Aspects of Sentence-level Errors in University Freshmen’s Writing)

초록

본 연구는 대학 신입생 글쓰기에 나타난 오류를 문장 층위에서 분석하고, 그 오류 양상을 고찰한 것이다. 글쓰기는 대학이라는 학문 공동체에서 자신의 생각을 표현하는 도구로서 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 아는 것을 이해하고 전달하는 능력이야말로 학문 활동에서 전제되는 필수적인 능력이기 때문이다.
대학 신입생의 글쓰기 79편에 나타난 문장 차원의 오류를 범주별로 분석·고찰한 결과, 부적절한 어휘 사용 오류가 가장 높은 빈도로 나타났다. 유사한 단어와 구의 반복, 정제되지 않은 입말 표현, 문장의 의미에 맞지 않는 단어 사용 등 어휘 오류의 양상 또한 다양하다. 두 번째는 길고 복잡한 문장 사용으로 인한 오류이다. 문장의 특성을 고려하지 않은 채 필자가 담고 싶은 메시지를 단순 나열하게 되면 문장이 필수적으로 지켜야할 통사적 규칙에서 벗어나기 쉽다. 학생들의 문장을 살펴보면 복잡한 주술 관계 및 연결어미를 사용한 과도한 수준의 접속 양상 역시 두드러지는데, 문장이 길어지면 길어질수록 성분들 간의 관계 등 고려해야 할 요소가 늘어난다는 점을 염두에 두어야 한다. 세 번째는 각 문장성분에 적합한 조사 사용 오류에 관한 것이다. 글말은 입말과 다르다는 점을 고려하여 문장 작성 시에는 부적절하거나 불필요한 조사가 없는지 스스로 검토하는 노력이 필요하다. 네 번째는 관용 표현에 대한 인식 부족으로 인한 오류이다. 관용 표현은 언어 공동체 사이에서 널리 통용되는 구조적·의미적 표현으로, 이를 이해하기 위해서는 한국어 화자로서의 직관이 필요하다. 따라서 관용 표현에 맞는 문법적·어휘적 요소들을 전반적으로 고려하여 사용하도록 지도하는 것이 중요하다. 본 오류 분석 결과를 토대로 대학생들에게 실제적으로 도움이 되는 문장 쓰기 교육이 더욱 확대·고안되어야 할 것이며, 그러한 연구를 시작하는 데 본 연구 결과가 작은 밑거름이 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

This thesis analyzed errors in university freshmen’s writing at the sentence level and studied the error aspects. Writing is important as a tool that freshmen use to express their ideas with in the scholastic community called the university. The ability to understand and express what students know to other people is essential for academic activities.
The study analyzed sentence-level errors by error criteria in 79 pieces of writing by university freshmen. The results found the most common errors: First, the use of improper vocabularies was most frequent. These errors included repetition of similar words and phrases, expression of unrefined spoken language, and use of words which did not match the meanings of sentences. Second came the long, complicated sentences. When writers simply expressed the message they wanted to convey without considering the characteristics of sentences, the sentences did not follow the necessary syntactic rules. The sentences also contained remarkable and excessive conjunctive aspects that used complicated predication and connective endings. So students should keep the point that the longer the sentence, the more elements to consider in the sentence. Third were the errors of using incorrect postpositions for sentence components. Efforts were required to examine if there were improper or unnecessary postpositions in sentences by considering that written language is different from spoken language. Fourth were errors due to the lack of knowledge of idiomatic expressions. These are structural and semantic idiomatic expressions which have a wide currency among linguistic communities and require intuition as native speakers to understand them. Therefore, it is necessary to guide students in considering and using grammatical and lexical elements that match the idiomatic expressions . Based on these analytical results, sentence writing education, which is practically helpful for university students who speak Korean as their native language, should be further expanded and developed. In addition, the study results can be a small stepping stone for beginning studies on sentence writing education .
