합치라는 환영－대학생 담론과 1970년대 최인호 문학－ (The Illusion of Coincidence－The Discourse of University Students and Choi Inho’s Literature in the 1970s－)

초록

최인호는 1970년대 한국의 현대화, 산업화, 도시화에서 파생되는 문제에 대하여 가족, 도시, 청년 등의 키워드를 통하여 다루었다. 특히 청년문화의 대표로서 1970년대를 대변했던 최인호에 대한 평가는 크게 두 가지였다. 하나는 명랑과 우울이라는 현실에 대한 모순적인 대조 속에서 현대성에 관한 문제의식을 갖춘 작가라는 것이었고, 다른 하나는 시장과 자본의 논리에 휘둘린 속물적 작가라는 것이었다. 이러한 점에서 작가를 연상시키는 대학생 소설가 ‘최준호’를 통하여 1970년대 산업화 시대의 군사 정권과 대학생 담론의 관계를 담아낸 「무서운 複數」(1972)는 특색이 있는 작품이다. 「무서운 복수」는 대학생 담론이 1970년대 최인호 문학의 형성에 미친 영향과 동시대의 대학생을 형상화하는 작가의식을 가장 문제적으로 보여준다.
이 글에서는 크게 두 가지의 작업을 수행하였다. 우선 『최인호 에세이집』』(1976)의 ‘청년문화론’을 분석하였다. 다음으로 「무서운 복수」에 나타난 대학의 군사화와 대학생 소설가의 소설 쓰기에 관한 문제를 탐구하였다. 이를 통해 합치의 관념을 상대로 대학생이 무엇을 어떻게 수행하는가에 대하여 살펴보았다. 「무서운 복수」는 1970년대 최인호 문학 연구의 영역에서 많은 주목을 받아왔던 작품은 아니다. 그러나 「무서운 복수」는 최인호가 1970년대의 대학 사회와 대학생을 본격적으로 다룬 작품이라는 점에서 중요하다. 이 글에서는 「무서운 복수」를 통하여 1970년대의 대학생에 대한 역사적 평가와 정체성 인식에 관한 작가의 방법론적 시각을 확인하였다. 결과적으로 1970년대 최인호 문학에 나타난 대학생 담론에서 탈-합치의 서사의 의미와 대학생 소설가의 정체성이 어떻게 나타나는지 규명하였다.

영어초록

The writer, Choi Inho, approached the issues deriving from modernization, industrialization, and urbanization of the Korean society in the 1970s through the key words such as family, city, and youth. Choi Inho represented the youth culture of the 1970s, and the views on the author are largely divided into two branches. One is that the author explored reality and modernity of a society within the contradiction of cheerfulness and melancholy. And the other is that the author committed himself to the logic of the market and capital. In this regard, his novel Scary Multiple is a notable work that projected the military government during the industrialization era of the 1970s and the discourse of university students through the protagonist named Choi Junho, a university student writer that is evocative of the author. Scary Multiple underscores the impact of the discourse of university students on Choi Inho’s literature in the 1970s as well as the author’s approach to portraying university students of his time.
This paper attempts two tasks. First, it analyzes a theory on the youth culture that was published in an anthology of Choi Inho’s essays. Second, it explores the militarization of universities and the writing of novels by university students as shown in Scary Multiple. By doing so, the paper examines what the university students of the time undertook and how, in terms of the idea of coincidence. Scary Multiple did not receive much attention in research on Choi Inho’s literary work from the 1970s. Nonetheless, it is an important work as the author addressed the issues of university community and university students of the 1970s in depth. This paper investigates the author’s methodological view on the historical evaluation of university students of the 1970s and their self-perception of identity. And it verifies how the meaning of de-coincidence narratives and the identity of student writers appeared in the discourse of university students as represented in Choi Inho’s literature in the 1970s.
