인문・사회계열 대학생의 공학계열 전공변경 경험에 대한 질적 사례연구: 충남 소재 대학교 재학생을 중심으로 (Qualitative Case Study on Experiences of Changing Major to Engineering for Undergraduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Focused on Undergraduates Enrolled in University in Chungcheongnam-do P)

초록

본 연구에서는 인문․사회계열에서 공학계열로 전공변경한 대학생들의 경험을 분석함으로써 전공을 변경하게 된 개인적 특성 및 맥락적 상황을 이해하고 전환하는 과정에서의 어려움 및 대처전략들을 탐구하고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 위해 다음과 같은 세 가지 연구문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 인문․사회계열 대학생은 공학계열로의 ‘전공변경 이전’에 어떤 경험들을 하는가? 둘째, 인문․사회계열 대학생은 공학계열로의 ‘전공변경 실행’에서 어떤 경험들을 하는가? 셋째, 인문․사회계열 대학생은 공학계열로의 ‘전공변경 이후’에 어떤 경험들을 하는가? 본 연구를 위해 의도적 표본추출 방법을 사용하여 충남 소재 4년제 대학교 재학생 중 인문․사회계열에서 공학계열로 전과한 총 4명의 연구 참여자 경험을 분석하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 전공변경 이전의 핵심주제는 “진로재구성 및 전공 주춧돌 다시 세우기”로 나타났다. 현실과 타협한 막연한 전공 선택으로 현 전공에서의 전공-진로 불일치를 경험하였으나 심층적인 자기탐색을 통해 공학계열 전공으로의 변경 이유를 명확히 밝히고 최종 결정을 하였다. 둘째, 전공변경 실행에서 핵심주제는 “전공변경을 향한 자기주도적 성장발판 마련하기”로 나타났다. 공학계열로의 전공변경 실행 과정에서 준비 부족의 어려움이 경험되었으나 관계적․학업적․환경적 측면에서 자기주도적인 기반 구축을 통해 성공적인 전공변경을 이루어냈다. 셋째, 전공변경 실행 이후의 핵심주제는 “자기개념 확장으로 전진하기”로 나타났다. 전공변경 실행 이후에도 이들은 학업적응, 관계형성, 정보 부재에 대한 어려움을 경험하였으나 긍정신념으로 전환하고 재구성한 진로목표에 집중함으로써 전공변경 실행 이후에 경험되는 변화를 용기있게 극복해 나아갔다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 의의 및 향후 연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.

영어초록

This study aimed to analyze experiences of undergraduates who changed their majors from humanities and social sciences to engineering, deepen understanding of their personal characteristics and context situation, and explore challenges posed when changing their major and how to cope with them as well. Thus, a total of three research questions were set as follows to achieve the study goal. First, what did the undergraduates in the humanities and social sciences experience ‘before changing their major’ to the engineering? Second, what did they experience ‘when working on to change their major’ to the engineering? Third, what did they experience ‘after changing the major’ to the engineering? For this study, the experiences of four research subjects who attended four-year university located in Chungcheongnam-do Province and changed their major from the humanities and social sciences to the engineering were analyzed through purposive sampling. Research findings were as follow; first, it turned out that main theme before changing their major was “to reconstruct career and lay the foundation stone again for the major.” As they compromised with reality and chose their major indecisively, they came to experience discrepancy between the major and career but started to clarify why they changed to the engineering through in-depth self-exploration and make final decision. Second, the main theme when working on to change their major was “to have a new self-directed foothold to change the major.” They had difficulties when working on to change their major to the engineering as they’re unprepared. But they established the self-directed foothold in terms of relationship, study, and environment to successfully change their major. Third, the main theme was after changing the major was “to move forward expanding the self-concept.” They experienced difficulties in academic adjustment, building relationships and lack of information afterwards but tried to convert them with positive belief, while focusing on their reconstructed career goal and getting over with changes they had to undergo courageously. Lastly, this study came up with implications and suggestion for future studies.
