일본적 영성론과 국학의 생명관 (A New Myth of Nature and Life based on the Reinterpretations of a Myth －With a focus on Oneuri, an animation that reinterpreted Woncheongangbonpuri－)

초록

이 글은 일본의 국학(国学) 사상을 집대성한 모토오리 노리나가(本居宣長)를 출발점으로, 그의 제자인 핫토리 나카쓰네(服部中庸)와 히라타 아쓰타네(平田篤胤)의 신화 해석을 중심으로 하여 국학의 생명관의 계보를 검토한 것이다. 일본 신화에서 생명론의 직접적인 소재가 된 것은 ‘무스비(産霊)’라고 하는 생성의 신령, 그리고 그와 연동하여 죽음론의 소재가 된 것은 ‘요미(黄泉)’라고 하는 사자들의 나라였다. 고대국가의 기원과 천황 지배의 정통성을 주제로 하는 『고사기(古事記)』 신화를 확대해석하여, 노리나가는 그 주석서 『고사기전(古事記伝)』에서 세계의 기원에 대해 이야기하는 신화를 찾고자 했다. 그리고 이러한 『고사기전』이 만들어낸 코스몰로지는 나카쓰네의 『삼대고(三大考)』에서 서구의 지동설과 결합하여, 신화 속의 세계가 천체로서의 태양·지구·달의 생성으로 연결된다는 독특한 우주론으로 발전했다. 이처럼 국학자들에 의해 창출된 새로운 신화적 세계상은 아쓰타네의 『다마노미하시라(霊能真柱)』로 계승되면서, 사후세계와 영혼의 행방이라는 또 다른 논의로 전개되었다.
근대의 일본적 영성론은 이와 같은 근세 국학의 일본주의에 철저히 대항하는 원리로서 주장된 것이다. 그것은 신도적 영성론에 대한 편견으로 가득 차 있음에도 불구하고, 전후 신도 비판의 흐름에 편승하여 영향력을 가지게 되었고, 따라서 국학 및 신도에 대해 정당한 평가가 저해되는 결과를 가져왔다. 무엇보다 근세 사상사의 흐름을 이성의 추구와 영성의 추구라는 두 가지 측면에서 볼 때, 노리나가로부터 아쓰타네로 이어지는 국학을 일본사상사로 자리매김하면서 이성주의는 근대에 흡수된 반면에 영성주의는 전면 부정되었다. 이 글은 전자만을 들어 일본 비판을 논해왔던 종래의 국학 연구에 대해, 후자에 대한 재조명의 가능성을 시도한 것이다.

영어초록

This paper presents the analysis results of Oneuri, which is an animation work that newly interpreted the issues with nature and life based on the original folk myth of Jeju Island called “Woncheongangbonpuri." The study first analyzed the narrative features and current values of the original “Woncheongangbonpuri," which had such narrative features as the narrative of ego search, the narrative of mutual survival, and fantasy of space. Those narrative elements still generate valid meanings in modern society.
Oneuri accepts the narrative structures and meanings of the original work and, at the same time, differs from it in terms of the personality of Woncheongang and the goals and results of exploration. The animation also shows partial changes to the appearance order of supporters and the problem solving methods. While Woncheongang is the origin of time where the four seasons are present as the world of gods in the myth, it is a fundamental world where man is not separated from nature in the animation. As the character of Woncheongang changes, the exploration goal of Oneuri moves to the restoration of the lost fundamental hometown.
The exploration processes and problem solving methods of the animation also partially changed to emphasize mutual relations and altruistic views of life. Those changes brought a completely different end for the animation from the myth. In the animation, the problems of the world are resolved by the chain reaction of the characters' acts with no gods and oracles. It also presented an ideal world where man and nature complemented each other in symmetry through the problem solving processes and the restored Woncheongang.
The man-nature relationships and the altruistic views of life in Oneuri are mythical alternatives to overturn the man-, science-, and reason-centric modern thinking and restore the symmetry between man and nature. The circulation and balance of nature in the animation are the mythical alternatives to restore the nature and life that have been destroyed by the greed of man and the clues for an ideal world that man of the present time should reach.
