중앙아시아 출신 유학생들의 한국어 학습 전략에 대한 연구 -정부초청외국인 대학원 장학생을 중심으로- (A study of Korean learning strategies employed by foreign students from Central Asia: Case study of Government invited Korea Scholarship students)

초록

중앙아시아 출신 정부초청장학생 4명을 대상으로 Oxford(1990)의 언어학습 전략 설문 도구와, 직접 인터뷰를 통해서 한국어 학습 전략에대해서 관찰했다.
개방형 질문을 활용한 1차 직접 면접을 통해서는 연구참여자들의 한국어 학습 배경, 학습 목표, 구체적 학습 방법과 시간, 학습자적 특징을 파악할 수 있었다. 중앙아시아라는 출신이라는 특징에서 도출된유의미한 사항은 고려인, 하자르 민족이라는 민족성과 자국 문화와한국문화의 유사성으로 인한 친한국적 정서가 한국어 학습과 한국의유학의 강력한 동인이 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 중앙아시아 출신연구참여자 4명 모두 제 1언어가 러시아어였으며, 러시아어와 한국어와의 상이함 때문에 영어를 통해서 한국어를 이해하고 학습한다고 응답하였다.
심층 직접 면접을 통해서 학습자들의 학습 전략에 대해 도출한 내용은 다음과 같다. 학습자들의 요구도가 가장 높은 것은 사회적 전략이었다. 학습자마다 자신의 특성에 맞게 적극적이고 능동적으로 학습 전략을 활용하고 있는 것은 인지적 전략이었다. 그러나 기억 전략에서는학습자들이 유의미한 전략을 가지고 학습하기보다는, 기계적 암기나반복 전략에 그치고 있었으며, 기억 전략의 어려움과 개선 방법에 대해 토로하였다. 또한, 한국어 학습의 긴장과 스트레스를 해소하기 위한 정의적 전략이 부족하였다.
이 연구는 중앙아시아 출신 유학생은 물론 한국어 학습자의 학습 전략을 이해하고 이를 바탕으로 한국어 교수 방법을 설계할 수 있는 데기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture 16-2, 255-281. In this study, four Government invited Scholarship students from Central Asia were interviewed and observed using a language learning strategy questionnaire by Oxford (1990); their Korean learning strategies were examined through direct interviews as well.
The first round of interviews included open-ended questions through which we were able to elucidate the background, learning objectives, specific learning methods and times, and learner characteristics of the study participants.
The students’ Central Asian origins were found to be significant in that the familiarity of nationality associated with the ethnicities of Goryeo and Hazar people as well as the similarity of Korean culture and Korean culture have become powerful catalysts of Korean language acquisition and education in Korea. Furthermore, all participants from Central Asia responded that their first language was Russian, and as a result of the differences between Russian and Korean, they understood and learned Korean through English.
The following learner strategies were identified through in-depth interviews. The most demanding of learners was the social strategy (socio-linguistic aspect). Learners actively utilized cognitive strategy based on their characteristics. However, in terms of the memory strategy, learners did not employ a meaning-based strategy since they only utilized mechanical memorization or repetitive strategies. In the interviews, students reported difficulties in utilizing memorization strategies. A memory strategy should be developed that deviates from simple memorization. Moreover, there was a lack of positive strategies that could ease the tension and stress of Korean language learning.
Most learning strategy items in the colloquial aspect of the research participants were high; however, they complained about the difficulty of utilizing the memorization strategy and the high demand for social strategy through communication with Korean people in Korean.
Furthermore, students indicated the low level of positive strategies to overcome learning difficulties. Korean Teachers should be aware of these difficulties.
