색이름을 통한 색채의 감성 연구 (A Study on Affective Meaning in regard to the Semantic Use of Color Words)

초록

일상생활에서 색을 전달하고자 할 때 일반적으로 많이 사용하는 것이 색이름이다. 노랑, 파랑 등의 색이름을 듣거나 읽을 때 그 색이름에 해당하는 색채 표상이 마음으로부터 떠오르는 것을 경험한다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라 사람들이 색을 구별할 때 사용하는 색이름을 통한 색채의 감성적 의미와 색채의 이미지가 구체적으로 어떠한 색인지를 조사하고자 하였다.
KS A 011 물체색의 색이름으로부터 빨강, 주황, 노랑, 연두, 초록, 청록, 파랑, 남색, 보라, 자주, 검정, 하양과 같은 기본색이름을 선정하였다. 이러한 색이름을 통한 색채의 인상은 SD법(Semantic Differential Method)을 통하여 평가 받았다. 더불어 시간 경과에 따른 색채의 인상 변화 경향을 알아보기 위해 총 89명의 피험자로부터 약 10년간 세 차례에 걸쳐 실험을 진행하였다. 그리고 색이름을 통한 구체적인 색을 조사하기 위해 KS표준색 155를 사용하여 색이름에 대응하는 색을 선택하는 색선택 test를 하였으며 본 연구의 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
1) 10개의 기본색이름은 공통된 의미를 가진 평가·잠재성, 활동성, 선명함 요인으로 규정되었다.
2) 시간의 경과에 따른 색채의 인상에 관하여 살펴본 결과, 연두, 하양, 검정 등은 유의미한 변화가 없는 반면에 노랑은 많이 변화는 것을 확인하였다.
3) 색이름을 통한 색채의 이미지가 구체적으로 어떠한 색인지를 알고자 색선택 실험을 하였으며 기본색이름에 대응하여 2-3개의 유사한 특정색이 집중적으로 선택된 것을 확인하였다.

영어초록

In general color words are being used to communicate a subject-matter, which relates to currents of color. When we read or hear the word that defines the notion of a certain color-yellow, blue, red etc., we experience the stimulation of an image, which has been coined in our minds, based on the experience we have had with the stimuli. In this study we have investigated the stimuli of imagery and terminological qualities that correspond to the words we use for colors. This is has meaningful in order to clarify the psychological conceptualizations of color and the type of stimulation a word of color can initiate.
The basis of terminological specification such as Red, Orange, Yellow, Yellow-Green, Green, Blue-Green, Blue, bluish Violet, Purple, reddish purple, White, Black had been chosen from KS[Korea Standard] A 00 11. In order to assess the type of impressional qualities that people are able to describe corresponding to these color word, it was applied a method called the Semantic Differential Method. Further, a survey of randomly chosen subjects(89), surveyed over a period of ten years in three intervals, was conducted in order to examine the changing trends of color impression over time. Using KS standard color 155, color selection test also got conducted to investigate the stimuli of imagery that correspond to the color words.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:1) The group of basic color-names can be divided into three factors of color-affective qualities: the labels used to describe these factors are evaluation-potency, activity, vividness.
2) The result of assessing the impressional color-qualities people are stimulated by over time indicate, that the colors White, Black and Yellow-Green show no significant change during the period of ten years. Yellow though was confirmed to be subject to significant changes.
3) On the basis of a color-matching-test and specifically selected colors, we have investigated which color stimulates the memorial and affective charge of a color-image, and how this corresponds with the actual word we have been conditioned to use for it. We were able to confirm similarities of correspondence in two or three of the selected color.
