그림에 나타난 색과 정서의 관계- 색을 통해 표현된 정서와 색으로부터 연상된 정서를 중심으로 (Relationship between Color and Emotion in Drawings - Based on Emotion Expressed through the Color and Emotion Associated with the Color)

초록

본 연구는 사람들이 색에 대해 고유하게 지니고 있는 정서가 색을 사용하여 그림을 그릴 때도 그대로 반영되는 가를 알아보기 위해, 특정 색을 사용하여 표현하고자 하는 정서와 그 색으로부터 연상하는 정서의 관계를 고찰해보았다. 이를 위해, 연구 대상자 총 36명에게 그림을 그리게 한 후, 그림에서 주로 사용한 3가지 색을 통해 표현하고자 한 정서를 밝히도록 하였다. 2주 이상의 간격을 두고 다시 각 색으로부터 연상되는 정서를 평정하도록 하여 이전 결과와의 관계를 분석하였다. 정서의 분류는 ‘한국판 정적 및 부적 정서 척도(Positive and Negative Affect Schedule: PANAS)’를 활용하였고, 자료의 교차 분석을 위해 카이제곱 검정(Chi-square test)을 실시하였다. 연구의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 색을 통해 표현된 정서와 색으로부터 연상된 정서의 일치 여부는 특정 정서 여부와 유의미한 상관이 없고, 정적 혹은 부적 정서인가의 여부와 유의미한 상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 때, 정적-정적 정서의 일치가 부적-부적 정서의 일치보다 높은 비율로 나타났다. 둘째, 색을 기준으로 했을 때, 색을 통해 표현된 정서와 색으로부터 연상된 정서의 일치 여부는 특정 색과 상관이 없고, 정적 혹은 부적 정서의 일치 여부와도 유의미한 상관이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 다만 유채색과 무채색으로 구분해 보면, 유채색이 무채색보다 특정 정서의 일치도가 높게 나타났다.

영어초록

This study examines whether the emotions that people attempt to express using a particular color in drawings are consistent with the emotions that are associated with the color. For this purpose, a total of 36 participants were asked to draw a picture and to identify the emotions expressed through the three colors used most in the picture. After two weeks or more, the same participants were requested to identify emotions associated with the colors. The two survey sets were then compared to analyze the relationship between color and emotion. Classification of emotions was based on the Korea Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and the Chi-square tests were employed for cross-analyses of the data. The major results of the study are as follows. First, the correspondence between the emotions expressed through the colors and the emotions associated with the colors is not related to specific emotions, as it instead depends significantly on whether the emotions are positive or negative. In particular, the match between a positive and a positive emotion is higher than the match between a negative and a negative emotion. Second, the correspondence between the emotions expressed through the colors and the emotions associated with the colors is not related to specific colors either, nor is there a significant relationship with the match of the positive or negative emotions. Nevertheless, when classified into chromatic and achromatic colors, the correspondence in the case of chromatic colors was higher than that in the case of achromatic color.
