19세기 조선왕실 소용 淸代 釉上彩 瓷器 연구 (A Study on Qing Porcelain with Overglaze Decoration Used by the Joseon Royal Family in the 19th Century)

초록

근대 동아시아와 유럽은 중국발 유상채 자기의 절대적 영향 하에 그들만의 자기 문화를 구축하고 있었다. 반면 조선은 여전히 청화백자의 생산과 사용이 주를 이루고 있었다. 그럼에도 조선 후기의 자기문화를 들여다보면 중국 유상채 자기의 유입과 사용이 상당 이루어졌음이 문헌기록 및 출토·현존 유물을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 上品의 청화백자를 생산할 수 있었던 조선에게 중국의 청화백자는 더 이상 매력 있는 상품이 아니었으며 모방의 대상도 아니었다. 그러나 유상채 자기는 청화백자로 모방할 정도로 상당한 애호가 있었던 것으로 보인다. 다만 현존하는 수량이 절대 부족하고 종류 또한 많지 않아 조선 후기 사회에 유통·소비된 유상채 자기를 심도 있게 연구하기에는 다소 무리가 있는 점은 분명 한계로 지적된다. 다행히 조선왕실 소용 자기나 왕족일가의 유물 중 청대 유상채 자기가 남아 있어 이런 부분을 어느 정도 보강할 수 있을 것이다.




사실상 지금까지 조선사회에 유통되는 중국산 수입자기들에 대한 일반적 시각은 양국 간의 정치, 경제, 문화 교섭 하의 부산물로 다루어져 왔다. 물론 오랜 기간 자기제조업과 시장 형성이 국가에 의해 통제되어 발전과 확산이 이루어진 것은 사실이나, 19세기는 국력의 쇠락화가 진행되면서 자연스럽게 대규모 상인집단의 매매 및 국가 간의 교역 활동을 통하여 자기시장이 유지되어 왔다. 이는 자기 생산과 소비에 있어 국가의 통제가 다소 엄격했던 18세기와는 구분되는 중요한 요소라고 판단된다. 19세기 조선왕실에서 소용되었던 중국 자기들의 성격과 그 유입과정이 이전과는 분명 달랐을 것이다. 본 연구는 이 현상을 상기하며, 19세기 조선왕실 소용 자기들의 성격을 구체적으로 파악하고자 한다.

영어초록

The porcelain culture that had developed in East Asia and Europe in modern times was strongly influenced by Chinese porcelain with overglaze decoration. Even though potters in the Joseon Era primarily produced and used blue and white porcelain, literature and excavated remains from the late Joseon Dynasty have shown that Chinese porcelain with overglaze decoration was indeed introduced and used during the late Joseon Dynasty. During this time, Chinese blue and white porcelain was no longer a highly sought-after item and was not the subject of imitation by Joseon potters, because they were capable of producing high-quality blue and white porcelain. Despite this declining trend, the many potters still used overglaze decoration techniques to make blue and white porcelain. Due to an insufficient number of existing porcelain artifacts and a lack of variety, it is difficult to conduct in-depth research on the overglaze decoration on porcelain circulated and used by the people of the late Joseon Dynasty. Fortunately, the porcelain and Qing porcelain with overglaze decoration used by the Joseon royal family still remain today, helping overcome, to some extent, existing limitations in related research.




Generally, the circulation of Chinese porcelain during the Joseon Dynasty is considered to have been a result of the political, economic, and cultural exchange between the two countries during the time. In fact, it is true that the production and the market growth of porcelain had long-since been controlled by the government, but, with the decline of the monarchy in the 19th century, the porcelain market was largely self-maintained through the sales activities of large-scale merchant groups and international trade. In terms of the sale and distribution of porcelain, this is an important factor that distinguishes the 19th century from the 18th century, a time in which the country was quite strict about porcelain production and consumption. Given this distinction, the Chinese porcelain used in the 19th century Joseon Dynasty must have had different characteristics and introduction paths than porcelain from previous periods. Based on this observation, this study intends to specifically identify the characteristics of porcelain used by the Joseon Royal family in the 19th century
