한글 활판본 [성경직해]에 나타난 번역상의 특징 (Translation feature of Korean Typographic version of the Shengjing zhijie)

초록

한글 활판본 『성경직해』는 천주교 전례주년에 맞추어 전례용으로 읽기 위하여 편집한 신약성경 복음 독서집이다. 그래서 전례주년상의 모든 주일과 주요 축일을 배열하고, 해당 날짜에 읽도록 지정되어 있는 복음 구절들을 번역하여 싣고 있다. 하지만 복음 구절만을 번역한 것은 아니다. 해당 구절에 대한 간단한 주해와 상세한 해설, 성경 구절을 묵상 주제와 연결하여 마땅히 실천해야 할 덕목에 대한 설명, 그리고 해당 주일 및 축일과 관련한 기도 지향과 바쳐야 하는 기도문 등도 함께 실었다. 본고에서는 기존 연구에서 제대로 다루지 않은 한글 활판본을 연구 대상으로 삼아서 두 가지 주제에 주목하고자 한다. 먼저 천주교의 고유한 교리 내용을 담은 용어나 개념 가운데 어떤 것들이 라틴어에서 한문을 거쳐 한글로 수용되었는지를 살피고자 한다. 이어서 한글 활판본 『성경직해』의 독특한 텍스트 변개 및 번역 양상이 잘 드러난 대표적인 사례로서 「예수수난첨례성경」 편을 분석하고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 본고는 한글 활판본 『성경직해』가 지닌 번역상의 특징이 중층성에 있음을 확인할 것이다. 즉 한문본 『성경직해』를 그대로 한글로 옮기는 단선적인 번역이 아니었으며, 조선 천주교에서의 쓰임새에 맞춘 재편집에 더불어, 조선에서 활동하던 프랑스 선교사들에 의한 라틴어 원문 재번역, 조선 신자들의 이해를 도울 목적으로 마련된 독자적인 주해와 해설 첨가 등이 모여서 여러 층위를 이루고 있음을 드러내고자 한다.

영어초록

After the Shengjing zhijie, was introduced to Koreans in the 18th Century, its translation was carried out by Catholics, and new concepts and terms came to Korea. It includes words of doctrine, liturgy, church system, theology as well as the various cultural heritages that European Catholicism has accumulated. Also, by analyzing the example of the chapter of “Gospel of Passion of Jesus Christ,” it was found that this document was not formed as an unilinear line of translation from Latin to Korean through Chinese. First of all, when the author Manuel Dias moved the Gospel passages from Latin to Chinese and gave proper commentary to the Catholics in China, the phenomenon of East-West cultural interaction occurred. Secondly, in the process of translating from Chinese to Korean manuscripts, another translations and text editing were performed by Korean Catholics and French missionaries. After contrasting Hangeul manuscripts with the Chinese texts, the excessively complicated commentary was deleted, the missing parts were filled, or the incorrectly edited parts were corrected. It was through the complicated process that Hangeul Typography “Holy Bible” was born. In this paper, as the Korean printed version of the Vulgate Bible was considered to be a finalized document, we examined the birth of neologism, the aspects of textual re-editing, the translational feature.
Eventually, the Chinese book, the Shengjing zhijie began to be flowed in, and was distributed in the form of Korean manuscript, and settled as a Korean typography. This meant that Korean Catholicism provided an opportunity to form a new language community and a new temporal community. By translating the Chinese text of Manuel Dias into Korean, Catholics accepted new terminology about Western religion and culture. In addition, by reading the biblical passage, commentary, meditation, and prayer in the Gospel, rearranged according to the liturgical year system, a new time order was formed by Catholic time cycle that was different from the official order of lunar calendar.
Consequently. was born a religious community that committed Jesus as Savior and had no fear on the governmental persecution.
