양양 낙산사 이대성(二大聖)의 정취보살상 고찰 (What did Jeongchui(Ananyagamin) Bodhisattva on Naksansa temple look like?)

초록

『삼국유사』 ‘낙산이대성관음정취조신’조에 의하면 낙산사는 관음보살의 주처이면서 정취보살상도 봉안되어 두 보살이 양대 신앙을 이루었음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 현재는 낙산사에 봉안되었던 정취보살상이 어떤 모습이었는지 전혀 전하지 않고 있다. 이에 일본 센소지 소장 혜허 필 <양류관음도>가 정취보살을 표현한 것일 수 있다는 선행연구는 낙산사 정취보살신앙에 대한 새로운 관심을 촉발하였다.
본고에서는 『삼국유사』의 기록을 통하여 낙산사에 봉안되었던 석상으로서의 정취보살이 어떤 모습이었을지 추정해보았다. 우선 정취보살상이 어린아이와 놀고 있었다는 점에서 그 모습이 어린아이를 닮았을 것으로 추정하고 북제·주 양식을 반영한 삼화령 미륵삼존의 협시보살상 계통의 양식이었을 것으로 추정해보았다.
이러한 양식은 범일국사가 활동했던 통일신라 후기와는 시대적으로 차이가 있지만, 『삼국유사』의 기록은 범일국사가 불상을 조성한 것이 아니라 발견한 것이므로 정취보살상이 실제 만들어진 시기는 범일국사보다 충분히 앞설 수 있다. 더불어 경주의 삼화령 불상 양식은 경북지역, 예를 들어 영주 가흥리 마애삼존불상의 협시보살과 같은 어린아이형 양식으로 확산되었고, 고려초기에는 강릉지역으로까지 퍼져나가 한송사지 석조보살좌상이나 신복사지 석탑 앞의 석조공양보살좌상 등으로 이어지고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 강릉에서의 유행은 범일국사의 정취보살상 설화와도 어떤 연관이 있었던 것이 아닌가 추정된다.
더불어 낙산사 정취보살상은 왼쪽 귀가 없는 점이 특징이었는데, 그 원인으로는 범일국사에 의해 보살상이 발견되었을 당시 실제로 왼쪽 귀가 손상된 상태였기 때문에 이러한 설화가 만들어진 것으로 추정해보았다. 특히 범일국사가 유학을 마치고 귀국한 배경에는 회창 폐불이라는 중대한 사건이 있었기 때문에 유학 막바지에 수많은 불상들이 훼손되는 것을 보고 참담한 심정으로 귀국했을 것이다. 그런 상황에서 한쪽 귀가 없는 보살상을 발견한 범일은 그 보살상이 마치 폐불을 피해 신라로 건너온 불상처럼 애틋하게 느껴졌을 것이다. 아마도 이러한 감정이 낙산사의 정취보살 설화를 탄생시킨 것이 아닐까.
더불어 정취보살의 도상이 관음보살의 도상을 차용하게 된 것은 보타산에 두 구의 관음보살상이 봉안된 것에서 비롯된 혼동이었을 것으로 보았다. 한 구는 오대산에서 옮겨와 보타산에 봉안한 소위 불긍거관음상이었고, 이 관음상을 영파의 개원사로 옮긴 후 새롭게 보타산에 봉안한 관음보살상이 두 번째 관음보살상인 바, 이 두 관음보살상 중의 한 구가 정취보살로 인식되면서 비록 서로 다른 보살이면서도 기본적으로는 관음보살의 도상을 공유하게 되었을 가능성을 제시해 보았다.

영어초록

According to the ‘Naksan's two bodhisattva and Josin’ story on Samgukyusa(三國遺事), it can be seen that Naksansa(洛山寺) Temple was not only the main residence of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva but also of Ananyagamin Bodhisattva(正趣菩薩)'s. However, currently, it is very hard to find the trace Ananyagamin Bodhisattva in Naksansa. Accordingly, previous research of <Willow brach Avalokiteshvara(楊柳觀音)> painted by Hyeheo(慧虛) owned by Japan's Senso-ji Temple, suggests that this painting can be a representation of this Bodhisattva who is disappear from Naksan temple.
In this essay, I estimated what the stone statue of Ananyagamin Bodhisattva enshrined in Naksansa would have looked like through the records of Samgukyusa. First of all, it is written that the statue was played with child, so it must be resembled a child. From this state, we guess the image belonged to the style of Maitreya Triad statue lineage from the Samhwaryeong(三花嶺), reflecting the Northern Je and Zhou(北齊·周) styles. Although this style is discordance with the period of monk Beomil(梵日), according to the records of Samgukyusa, Beomil did not create the Buddha statue but rather discovered it, so its actual date of produced may be more earlier then his time. In addition, this style in Gyeongju was inherited in the Gyeongbuk(慶北) region, such as the flanking Bodhisattva in the rock-carved Buddha triad in Gaheung-ri(可興里), Yeongju. And later in the early Goryeo period, it spread until Gangneung(江陵), such as the stone seated Bodhisattva statue at Hansongsa(寒松寺) temple site and the stone sitting Bodhisattva statue in front of stone pagoda at Sinboksa(神福寺) temple site. It can be assumed that this trend is probably related to the story of the Ananyagamin Bodhisattva statue of monk Beomil.
In addition, the characteristic feature of the Ananyagamin Bodhisattva statue at Naksansa was absence of left ear. It can be presumed that this story was created because the left ear was actually already damaged when the Bodhisattva statue was discovered by monk Beomil. In particular, when Beomil tried to returned to Silla after his studies abroad, there was a major incident called the Buddhist persecution of the Hoechang era(會昌廢佛), so he must have returned home with a devastated feeling after seeing numerous Buddhist statues being damaged in China. In such a situation, Beomil, who discovered the Bodhisattva statue without one ear, must have felt fondly of the Bodhisattva statue, as if it were a statue that came to Silla from China to escape the persecution. Perhaps this feeling is what gave birth to the story of Ananyagamin Bodhisattva at Naksansa.
In addition, it is thought that the reason why the iconography of Ananyagamin Bodhisattva was adopted from that of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was a confusion resulting from the fact that two Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara were enshrined on Mt. Putuo(普陀山) in China. One was the so-called ‘Do not move Avalokitesvara(不肯去觀音)’ statue that was moved from Mt. Wutai(五臺山) and enshrined on Mt. Putuo, and the other was Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue which was moved to Gaewonsa Temple and enshrined on Mt. Putuo in Ningbo. As one of the two Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statues was recognized as Ananyagamin Bodhisattva, I assumed that it begun to distinguished even both of them had shared the basically same iconography of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.
