박경리문학상을 통해 본 비서구권 세계문학상이라는 실천 (The Practice of the Non-western World Literature Award through the Park Kyong-ni Literature Award)

초록

이 글은 2011년 제정되어 ‘비서구권 작가에게 수여하는 세계문학상’으로 자리 잡은 박경리문학상의 과거와 현재를 진단하고 이를 바탕으로 문학상의 미래를 위한 자기반성적이고 건설적인 담론이 생성되길 기대하며 작성되었다. 먼저 박경리문학상이 진행되어 온 경과를 파악하기 위하여 관련 자료를 수집·정리하는 실증 작업을 하고, 문학상의 이상과 현실이 가로 놓인 담론의 역사를 검토했다. 문학상의 설립 취지와 추진되어 온 과정에서 보이는 주목할만한 지점들을 파악하고, 문학상이 설립되기 이전 한국 문단에 축적되었던 ‘세계문학’과 ‘제3세계 문학’에 관한 논쟁들, 그리고 ‘세계문학상’을 둘러싼 한국의 자기 인식을 배경으로 살펴보았다.
현재 국내문학상은 하루에 한 개의 문학상이 시상된다고 볼 수 있을 만큼 난립하고 있다. 그렇기에 문학연구는 이러한 제도를 재점검하고 문학장이 작동하는 양상을 아울러 분석하는 시야와 그 방향성을 제시하는 관점을 제공할 필요가 있다.
이를 위하여 본론은 몇 가지 질문에 대한 답을 구하는 방식으로 구성되었다. 1960년대부터 『토지』의 작가이자 여류소설가로서 알려진 박경리 작가를 기리는 박경리문학상은 어떤 취지로 누가 누구에게 어떻게 수여해왔으며, 그 방향성은 어떻게 변화되어왔는가? 심사위원장들과 수상자들은 문학상이라는 사건을 경험하며 어떤 사유를 전개했는가? 민족문학의 작가와 독자들은 과연 번역이라는 실천과 문학상이라는 제도를 통해 만날 수 있었는가? 2010년대 세계문학상이라는 제도는 1970년대로부터 시작된 ‘세계문학’, ‘제3세계문학’, ‘민족문학’, ‘민중문학’에 관한 논쟁들과 어떻게 교호하는가? 그 과정에서 심사와 수상의 주체들인 김치수, 김우창, 응구기 와 시옹오 등의 발화도 검토하였다.
한국 사회에서 ‘세계문학상’이 갖는 상징적 권위는 막대하다. 박경리문학상은 노벨문학상의 막강한 권위와 한계를 의식하며 설립되었다. 그렇다면 박경리문학상은 그간 노벨문학상이 받아온 비판을 보완하는 문학상이여야 할 것이다. ‘비서구권’ ‘작가’에게 주는 문학상의 정신과 실천에 대한 공시적 진단과 역사적 사명에 대한 통시적 고찰 등, 자기 인식과 반성이 수반될 때 박경리문학상은 더욱 예각화된 정체성으로 문학사의 변곡점에 개입하게 될 것이다. 세계문학이라는 상상의 구성체를 향한 제3세계의 창작과 비평은 반세기 동안 변화하면서도 지속되는 종결되지 않은 과제이기 때문이다.

영어초록

This article was written with the aim of generating self-reflective and constructive discussions for the future of the Park Kyong-ni Literature Award, which has been established as the “World Literature Award for Non-Western Writers.” Its purpose is to analyze the past and present of the award, with the hope that this analysis will foster meaningful and forward-thinking dialogues about the future of literary awards. Firstly, empirical work was conducted to collect and organize related data in order to understand the flow of the Park Kyong-ni Literature Prize. The discourse history, where literary ideals and reality intersected, was reviewed. The purpose of the literary award and notable points in the process were identified, along with Korea’s self-awareness surrounding “World Literature” and “Third World Literature” that had accumulated in Korean literature before the establishment of this literary award.
To accomplish this, the main body of the article was organized in a way that sought answers to several questions. It examined who and how the Park Kyong-ni Literature Award has been awarded to since the 1960s in honor of Park Kyong-ri, a renowned writer and female novelist , and how its direction has changed over time. After experiencing the literature award, the judges and winners explored the background of developed their thoughts. Could the writers and readers of national literature truly meet through the practice of translation and the system of literary awards? Furthermore, it investigated how the system called the World Literature Award in the 2010s interacts with the debates on ‘World Literature’, ‘Third World Literature’, ‘National Literature’, and ‘People Literature’, ‘People’s Literature’ that originated in the 1970s. Throughout this process, the speeches of Kim Chi-soo, Kim Woo-chang, Ngugi wa Thiong’o, the subjects of judging and award, were also reviewed.
The literature chapter encompasses complex and chained elements such as‘creation-translation-publishing-sales-reading-criticism-literatureaward’. Therefore, literary research needs to provide a perspective that analyzes the aspects of all these elements working together. Hence, this article was written with an awareness of the close relationship between creation and translation, publication and reading, criticism and literature.
The symbolic authority of the “World Literature Award” in Korean society is significant. The Park Kyong-ni Literature Award was established with an understanding of the strong authority and limitations of the Nobel Prize. The Park Kyong-ni Literature Award should aim for a literary award that complements the criticism of ‘conservative literary view centered on Western Europe, gender bias, moralism, and idealism’ that the Nobel Prize in Literature has received. Park Kyong-ni’s literature award will intervene in the turning point of literary history with a more acute identity when accompanied by self-awareness and reflection, such as a public diagnosis of the spirit and practice bestowed upon ‘a literature award for a writer’.
