조선 후기 무신의 중앙 관료생활 연구 —≪盧尙樞日記≫를 중심으로— (Military officials' life as central governmental officials, during the latter half period of Joseon: Examination of ≪No Sang Chu Ilgi(盧尙樞日記)≫)

In this article, the lives of the military officials, who composed one part of the Yangban structure of the Joseon society, and constituted one side of the government that was run in a world based upon literary and civil inclinations, are examined. And the figure who will receive particular attention is a man named No Sang Chu/盧尙樞(1746～1829), who served as a military official in both the central and local regions. He left a diary which we now refer to as ≪No Sang Chu Ilgi(盧尙樞日記)≫, and this diary covers his own memoirs since he was 18 and till he became 84. The diaries from the past that we have today are mostly from literary figures and civil officials, and that makes this ≪No Sang Chu Ilgi≫ unique and very important.
No Sang Chu was from a Yangban house in Seonsan/善山, and was in a dire financial situation. He was very determined to pass the military examination to make a proud career of his own, and he achieved what he wanted. As we can see from all kinds of expectation the people around him had for him, the military examination was still a most effective vessel for one who would like to enter the government gracefully, especially for the people living in local regions in the latter half period of the 18th century. After being assigned to become a Seonjeon-gwan/宣傳官 official as his first post in the government, he doggedly continued his efforts for career advancement and promotion, by manning hard(daily) duties(入直), practicing archery in preparation for various tests of talents(試才), and creating a personal network with many people who could help him in the future find more attractive posts inside the government.
Recently a variety of attempts have been made over the issue of how to perceive and understand the Joseon society in its latter half period. In this article such attempt was made by examining the 18th century Joseon society through a military officer's life as a governmental official serving in the central area. This would be a task of examining the reality of Joseon from an eye of a figure who was not part of the mainstream, and also a task that could contribute to exploring many issues that were neither sufficiently dealt with in the past nor addressed in previous studies.
