변혁을 향한 ‘완보’ : 그 방법론과 서사적 재현양상- 황석영의『객지』, 『오래된 정원』, 『철도원 삼대』를 중심으로 (‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation -its Methodology and Narrative Representation—Based on Hwang Seok-young’s Foreign Land, Old Garden, and Three Generations of Railwaymen -)

초록

이 논문은 황석영의『객지』,『오래된 정원』,『철도원 삼대』를 논의대상으로 한다. 본고는 이 작품들을 통해 ‘활동가로서의 이력을 갖는 작가’ 황석영의 문학적 특질을 조명해 보고자 하였다. 필자는 황석영이 이 작품들에서 사회변혁의 속도에 대한 문제 제기를 한 후, 그에 대한 해답을 서사화하고 있다고 보고 본고의 논의를 전개하였다.
황석영의 세 작품을 통해 엿볼 수 있는 사회변혁의 방법론은 ‘투쟁 및 변혁의 속도’와 관련을 맺는다. 황석영의 작품에는 혁명을 동경하는 인물이 등장한다. 하지만 작가 황석영은 혁명을 사회변혁의 방법론으로서 지지하지 않는 것으로 보인다. 황석영이 작품들을 통해 궁극적으로 제시하는 사회변혁의 방법론은 ‘변혁을 향한 완보’이다. 이 논문은 이러한 입장에서 ‘변혁을 향한 완보’의 실천 방식과 그 서사화 양상을 논의하였다. 본고는 활동가들의 수평적·수직적 연대가 ‘변혁을 향한 완보’의 실천 방식임을 밝히고 있다. 세부적으로 다수 활동가들이 변 혁이라는 공동의 목적을 위해 ‘나’를 익명화함과 동시에 ‘집단적 주체’를 구축하는 양상, 활동가들 간 변혁운동의 계승과 전수를 매개하는 여성인물의 역할을 논의하였다.
한편 본고는 이들 작품에서 ‘변혁을 향한 완보’가 서사적으로 재현되는 양상을 살폈다. 황석영이 그의 작품에서 사회변혁의 문제에 접근하는 방식은 관념적이 기보다는 구체적이다. 세 작품을 통해, ‘생활과 투쟁의 불가분적 관련성’을 살필 수 있는 바, 이는 황석영이 사회변혁의 문제에 구체적으로 접근할 수 있도록 돕는다. 생활과 투쟁 중 어느 한 쪽이 우위에 서든, 양자가 밀착하든, 작품 내에서 ‘생활’과 ‘투쟁’은 상호 분리할 수 없는 상태로 활동가들 삶의 주축을 이룬다. 이에 따라 본고는 ‘생활서사와 투쟁서사 간 거리’를 매개변수로 하여 ‘변혁을 향한 완보’의 서사적 재현 양상을 논의하였다. 이를 위해 특별히 노동자들이 활약하는 변혁운동에 주목하였다. 생활과 투쟁이 밀착된 그 변혁운동에서 생활이 투쟁의 도화선이자 버팀목이며, 혹은 저해요소로서 작용하고 있음을 살필 수 있었다. 이러한 생활과 투쟁의 관계는 궁극적으로 ‘변혁을 향한 완보’로 귀결된다. 본고는 투쟁과 변혁의 속도에 대한 이와 같은 논의를 서사적론적으로 뒷받침하기 위해 ‘서사시간’에 대한 논의를 덧붙이고 있다.

영어초록

This thesis focuses on Hwang Seok-young’s Foreign Land, Old Garden, and Three Generations of Railwaymen. Through these works, this paper attempted to shed light on the literary characteristics of Hwang Seok-young, a “writer with a history of being an Activist.” I developed the discussion of this paper, believing that Hwang Seok-young is narrating the answer while raising the question of ‘the Speed of Social Transformation’ in these works.
































The methodology of Social Transformation, which can be seen through Hwang Seok-young’s three works, is related to the ‘Speed of Struggle and Transformation’. Hwang Seok-young’s work features a person who yearns for Revolution. However, it seems that the writer Hwang Seok-young does not support this as a methodology for Social Transformation. The methodology of Social Transformation that Hwang Seok-young ultimately presents through his works is ‘‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation’. From this standpoint, this thesis discussed the practical method of ‘‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation’ and its narrative representation. This paper reveals that the horizontal and vertical Solidarity of activists is a way of practicing ‘‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation’. In detail, the pattern of many activists anonymizing ‘I’ for the common purpose of Transformation and building a Collective Subject at the same time, and the role of Female Characters mediating the succession and transmission of the Transformation Movement among activists were discussed.
Meanwhile, this paper examined the narrative reproduction of ‘‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation’ within the three works. Hwang Seok-young’s approach to the problem of Social Transformation in his work is concrete rather than ideological. Through the three works, we can examine the inseparable relationship between Living and Struggle, which helps Hwang Seok-young to specifically approach the problem of Social Transformation. Regardless of whether one of Living and Struggle is dominant or the two are close, within the work, Living and Struggle form the main pillars of the lives of activists in an inseparable state. Accordingly, this paper discussed the narrative reproduction aspect of ‘‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation’ using ‘the distance between the Living Narrative and the Struggle Narrative’ as a parameter. To this end, special attention was paid to the Transformation Movement in which Workers were active. In the Transformation Movement, where Living and Struggle are closely related, it could be seen that Living is the trigger, support, or impediment of the Struggle. This relationship between Living and Struggle ultimately results in ‘‘Slow Steps’ Towards Social Transformation’. This paper adds a discussion of ‘Narrative Speed’ to support this discussion about ‘the Speed of Struggle and Transformation’ narratologically.
