<삼두구미본>에 나타난 신의 성격과 서사 형성 배경 고찰-선악의 재정립 과정을 중심으로- (A Study of the Characteristics of God and the Developmental Background of the Narration Presented in - Focused on the Reestablishment Process of Good and Evil -)

초록

이 글은 제주도 특수본풀이 <삼두구미본>에 나타난 神의 성격과 서사 형성 배경을 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. <삼두구미본>은 제주도에서 ‘이장(천리)’할 때 불리는 무가이다. 본고에서는 移葬神의 성격을 가진 막내딸 이외에 제목에 드러나 있는 ‘삼두구미’神의 성격을 집중적으로 고찰하였다. 막내딸과 대립 관계에 있는 ‘삼두구미’의 성격을 온전히 밝혀야 막내딸의 의미와 <삼두구미본>의 정체성 또한 확증할 수 있다고 판단했기 때문이다.
분석 결과 <삼두구미본>에 나타난 ‘삼두구미’는 본래 ‘무덤 수호신’임을 알 수 있었다. 그는 애초에 무덤의 시신을 지키는 ‘수호신’ 성격을 가지고 있었으나, 묘를 옮겨야 하는 상황이 발생하자 새로운 신(移葬神)에 의해 퇴치되어야 하는 ‘악귀’로 변해버린다. 즉 <삼두구미본>은 기존에 있던 ‘무덤 수호신’이 시체를 훼손하는 등 부정적 존재로 변모되고, 대신 새롭게 등장한 移葬神이 그를 물리치는 것을 보여줌으로써 이장의 당위성을 설파하고 있는 巫歌이다.
그런데 이렇듯 기존의 무덤 수호신을 부정하면서까지 새로운 移葬神을 설정하는 자체가 사람들에게 큰 공감을 얻지 못했음을 알 수 있다. 실제로 기존 무덤 수호신을 악신으로 인정할 경우, 이장을 하지 않는 사람들의 입장에서는 자신들의 신을 부정하는 꼴이 되기 때문에, 이러한 신화가 크게 공감을 얻지 못하고 소멸된 것이다.
사실 ‘善惡’의 개념은 절대적인 것이 아니고 상대적인 것이기에 언제든 상황에 따라 바뀔 수도 있는 것이지만, 결국 善惡을 정립할 때 가장 중요한 것은 ‘공감대 형성’임을 알 수 있다. 즉 <삼두구미본>은 특정(移葬) 목적에 의해 선악의 재정립을 시도했으나 결과적으로 ‘많은 사람들의 공감대 형성에 실패’했기에, 일정 기간 일부 무당들에 의해서만 불리고 그 전승이 끊어진 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

This study aims to consider the characteristics of god and the background of narrative development appeared in <Samdugumibon>, a Jeju Island's Special Original Story. <Samdugumibon> is a shaman song chanted while moving a burial site in Jeju. This study focused on the characteristics of 'Samdugumi' God, which is shown in the title, in addition to the youngest daughter that has the characteristics of the god of burial site movement. Such approach is based on the reasoning that by completely identifying the characteristics of 'Samdugumi' that is in opposing relation with the youngest daughter, the meaning of youngest daughter and the identity of <Samdugumibon> could also be determined.
The analysis result showed that 'Samdugumi' appeared in <Samdugumibon> was originally the guardian of burial site. At first, he had the characteristics of 'guardian' who safeguards the body in the burial site, but as they needed to move the burial site, he becomes 'demon' that should be exorcised by the new god (the god of burial site movement). Hence, <Samdugumibon> is a shaman song that preaches the appropriateness of burial site movement, by showing the transformation of the 'guardian of burial site movement' into a negative being that mutilates the deceased body, and the scene that the newly appeared god of burial site movement repulses him.
However, it was found that the new concept of establishing the god of burial site movement by even negating the existing guardian of burial site did not significantly gain the public sympathy. If they accepted the concept of demonizing the existing guardian of the burial site, those who would not move the burial site should negate their god. Therefore, such mythology could not gain much sympathy and died out.
In fact, 'good and evil' is not an absolute, but a relative concept; it may change in accordance with the situation. However, the findings suggest that the most important factor when establishing the concept of good and evil is the formation of consensus. <Samdugumibon> attempted to reestablish the concept of good and evil with a specific purpose, but 'failed to form the public consensus,' so it seems that it was chanted by a few shamans for a certain period until it finally vanished.
