초록

이 논문은 분황 원효(芬皇元曉, 617~686)가 한국철학에 미친 영향을 삼세육추설과 퇴계 이황(1501~1570)의 사단칠정론의 접점과 통로를 살펴본 글이다.
원효 불학이 독창적으로 해석한 삼세육추설과 이황 유학이 독창적으로해석한 사단칠정론이 만나는 접점과 통로는 인간에 대한 새로운 이해를통한 자유로운 인간상과 주체적 인간상의 제시를 위한 노력이라는 지점이었다고 할 수 있다. 이들은 인간의 심연과 세계의 본질에 대해 깊이사유하면서 부처와 중생, 군자와 소인이 만날 수 있는 길을 제시하였다.
원효는 『대승기신론』의 기획과 구도를 계승하면서 그 역시 깨달음을 추구하는 주체적 인간, 자유로운 인간이 탄생하는 길을 제시하였다. 그것은부처와 중생, 여래와 범부의 차이성(不相雜性)보다는 동일성(不相離性)을모색한 것이었다. 또 그것은 일심 즉 중생심인 아리야식을 지닌 범부가부처로 탈바꿈하는 길이었다.이황은 주희의 리기호발설(理氣互發說)과 성선설(性善說)을 계승하면서 리기론(理氣論)적 해석을 덧붙이고, 그 사단의 실제적 구현을 리발설(理發說) 로 역설함으로써 리기(理氣)의 불상리성을 의식하면서도 리기의 불상잡성에 의거하여 군자와 소인이 만날 수 있는 길을 제시하였다.
물론 불교의 내불외살(內佛外薩)을 추구하는 불자들의 이상적 인간상인부처(보살)와 범부의 길을 구분없이 트려 했던 원효의 삼세육추설과 군자와 소인의 길을 구분한 뒤 그들 사이의 관계를 트려 했던 퇴계의 사단칠정론에서 부처-보살-범부와 군자-소인의 입각지가 같지는 않다. 하지만 이들은 시각과 불각, 삼세와 육추, 사단과 칠정 둘 사이의 차이성(불상잡성)과 동일성(불상리성)의 통찰 위에서 여래와 범부, 군자와 소인이 만날 수 있는 통로를 열 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper examines the influence of Bunhwang Wonhyo (617–686) on Korean Buddhism through a comparison of his theory on three subtle and six coarse aspects of nescience and Toegye Hwang Lee's (1501~1570) theory on four aspects of inherent human nature and seven aspects of human emotions.
This is part of an ongoing effort to find a pathway between the two theories. The point at which the two theories meet is the result of the human endeavor to suggest an image of the ideal human being that is subjective and unfettered from nescience. The combined contemplations led to philosophies that suggest methods through which an unenlightened person can become Buddha or a limited person can become a noble person.In the case of Wonhyo, while he succeeded the philosophies of the Awakening of Faith in the Mahāyāna, he developed them further into a method through which a human being can awaken and become free from nescience. His method was not focused on the differences between Buddha and an unawakened person. The focus was rather on their similarities in that his method was about how an unawakened person with store consciousness (ālayavijñāna) can become Buddha.
Toegye Hwang Lee succeeded Zhuzi’s Confucian philosophy on essence-and-energy-interaction-origination as well as the view of fundamental goodness of human nature, and he further developed these into his essence-origination theory. This theory was developed with a detailed explanation of why essence and energy cannot be separated.
By focusing on the difference between essence and energy, he was able to find a method through which a limited person can become a noble person.
A thorough examination of the differences and similarities between the two theories (three subtle aspects and six coarse aspects of nescience; four aspects of human nature and seven human emotions) reveals that both theories were able to find a pathway through which an unawakened person can become an awakened person and a limited person can become a noble person. Although the two methods were similar, they were not completely identical. Wonhyo’s theory on three subtle and six coarse aspects of nescience was an attempt to unite Buddha and the unawakened person from the perspective that they inherently have no differences. Toegye’s theory on four aspects of inherent human nature and seven aspects of human emotions first discerned the differencebetween a limited man and a noble man; then followed an attempt to reach a meeting point.
