삼대록계 국문장편소설에 나타난 상례(喪禮) 서술의 변모양상과 그 의미 (The meaning of transfiguration of the funeral rites of Three-generation Stories of the Joseon Dynasty)

초록

본 연구는 삼대록계 국문장편소설에 나타난 상례(喪禮) 서술의 변모 양상과 그 의미를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 삼대록계 국문장편소설은 모두 연작의 형태로 되어 있는데, 상례에 대한 서술은 대체로 연작의 후편 마지막 부분 즉 주인공의 부모나 주인공이 죽는 장면에서 이루어진다. 이에 대한 고찰은 이 작품군 각 편의 주제의식이나 서술 기법상의 차이를 구체적으로 알 수 있게 한다는 점에서도 의의가 있다.
먼저 『주자가례(朱子家禮)』를 기본으로 한 예서(禮書)와 우리나라 예학자(禮學者)들의 문헌을 통해 조선후기 상례의 절차와 실천 양상에 대해 살펴보았다. 조선의 사대부들은 죽음의 의미에 관한 이해와 그 실천적 태도에서 일정한 방식을 공유해 왔으므로 이에 대한 탐구는 중요한 작업으로 여겨진다. 조선후기에는 중국에서보다 더 강한 예법의 적용을 실천하기도 했는데, 특히 묘 옆에 여막을 만들고 시묘(侍墓)살이를 하는 풍습은 한국적 특색이다. 조선후기의 상층 사대부들은 시묘살이를 해야만 효를 제대로 행하는 것이라고 생각했는데, 삼대록계 국문장편소설에서도 이에 대해 중요하게 서술된다.
다음으로 소설에서의 상례에 대한 서술의 구체적 양상을 살폈다. 초기작에 해당하는 <소씨삼대록>에서는 상례의 절차에 대해 소략하게 제시되고 거의 모든 주인공이 몇 년 내에 몰아서 죽는 등 인물들의 죽음에 대해서 그다지 주목하지 않는다. 다만 어머니에 대한 효성을 표현한다는 면에서 중요하게 서술된다. <유씨삼대록>이나 <임씨삼대록>에서는 죽음에 대한 관심이 조금 확대되는데, <유씨삼대록>의 경우 진양공주의 요절과 그녀에 대한 추모 등에서 죽음의 문제가 심도 있게 형상화되면서 가문의 정치적 기반과 관련을 맺기도 한다. 하지만 상례에 대해 서술되는 부분은 적으며, <소씨삼대록>과 마찬가지로 주인공들이 몇 년 이내에 차례로 죽는다. 그러나 후기작인 <임씨삼대록>으로 가면 구체적인 상례 절차가 간략하게나마 서술되면서 과도하게 슬퍼하여 몸을 상하게 해서는 안 된다는 훼애(毁哀) 금지가 중요시된다. <조씨삼대록>에서는 상례의 절차가 비교적 소상히 제시되면서 분량의 면에서도 타작품의 몇 배에 달하는 지면이 할애된다. 부친상(父親喪), 모친상(母親喪) 외에 의모상(義母喪), 조부상(祖父喪), 아내상 등의 다양한 경우들이 제시되면서 상례 절차의 적용 문제, 중용(中庸)의 문제 등도 거론된다. 이러한 구체적 서술들을 통해 소설에서의 상례에 대한 서술양상이 향유층의 삶과 의식에 밀접하게 닿아 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본고의 연구 대상 작품들은 같은 유형으로 묶여 있지만 작품마다 상례의 실행에 대한 서술 방식이나 서술의 비중, 인물들의 대응 방식 등이 달랐다. 따라서 이를 통하여 작품군 내부의 편차, 변화 양상에 대한 입체적인 조망이 가능했다.

영어초록

The present study carried out an in-depth review of funeral ceremonies as described in some “three-generation stories” of the Joseon Dynasty, with its focus on identifying the chronological difference in the descriptions of funeral ceremonies and its implications. All the “three-generation stories” examined here is written in Korean vernacular and is in the form of a series. A funeral ceremony usually appears at the end of the last volume of a series, when the story comes to an end with the death of the protagonist or his parents. A focus on funeral ceremonies is meaningful in that it reveals the themes of this type of stories--the prosperity of family and succession of bloodline--and the orientation of their readership.
As a preparatory work, the author reviewed traditional funeral ceremonies found in ancient literature including Zhuzi jiali, or The Family Rituals of Zhu Xi. Since the upper-class literati of Joseon shared some characteristics in the understanding of death and its meanings as well as the attitude toward it, an effort to understand traditional funerary customs in general is considered to be of importance. In the late Joseon Dynasty, people applied etiquette rules to funeral process which were even stricter than those of China. Specifically, the custom of spending years beside the grave of one's parent, living in a humble make-shift hut, was a practice unique to Korea. The nobility of Joseon considered this type of mourning an essential part of their filial duties, and the depiction of this practice also forms an important part in the “three-generation stories” reviewed in this study.
The next step was to examine in detail the funeral rites as described in the stories. In the Three Generations of the Soh Family, which is the earliest of the reviewed works, the depiction of the funeral procedure is brief and cursory. In addition, almost all characters in the story die in a few years' time, which shows that the author of the story attached little meaning to the event of death. However, more attention is given to death in both the Three Generations of the Yu Family and the Three Generations of the Im Family. The former work, while describing the premature death of Princess Jinyang and people mourning over her death, deals with the termination of a person's life more seriously as something related with the family's political foundation. However, the funeral procedure itself is described very briefly, and all the main characters die one by one over a period of a few years, just like in the aforementioned story about the Soh Family. On the contrary, in the Three Generation of the Jo Family, which is the latest of the three, the description of funerals is quite detailed and its length is several times more than that in the other works. The story presents a variety of cases of mourning, such as funerals for one's father, mother, stepmother, wife, etc. It also mentions the different procedure for each case as well as the importance of moderation in executing the rite. To sum up, the study confirmed that the description of mourning procedures in the works under investigation is closely related to the life and consciousness of their respective readers.
Although the stories examined in this study are often mentioned and treated as a group known as the “three-generation stories,” they varied in the way funerals were described, in the length of their descriptions and in the characters' attitudes toward death. Therefore, it is concluded that funerals described in each story can serve as a factor that sheds light on the development and subtle thematic changes that occurred in the group of seemingly similar stories.
